BEA boys defeated by Waseca 69-35

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Feb 12, 2023

BEA’s Austin Skaden’s hair goes flying as he cruises by a St. Peter defender in a game played in Blue Earth on Jan. 31. In the Bucs’ most recent game, Skaden scored seven points when BEA traveled to Waseca on Feb. 3.

The Blue Earth Area boys basketball team struggled to put the ball through the hoop from outside the arc when they traveled to Waseca on Feb. 3 to take on the Bluejays in a Big South Conference clash. Meanwhile, their opponent got hot from long-distance range. The result was a 69-35 victory for Waseca.

BEA missed their first six shots to open the game, but fortunately Waseca also was having trouble getting the ball to go through the hoop and only built up a 6-0 lead before Ashton Lloyd was able to put the Bucs on the board courtesy of a pick and roll play with Max Loge.

Later in the opening half BEA would close the deficit to two points when Will Bromeland scored on an assist from Lloyd to make the score 12-10 with Waseca on top.

The Bluejays expanded their advantage to 22-12 with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.

Bromeland’s 3-pointer followed by his baseline runner cut Waseca’s lead to 22-17, but the Bluejays ended the half on a 6-2 run to take a 29-18 half time lead.

The Bucs’ long-distance shooting woes continued in the second half when they were outscored 41-16 by the Bluejays and were unable to make a run at their opponent.

BEA shot well from inside the arc. They made 65 percent (13 of 20) for 2-pointers. Waseca shot 47 percent (18 of 38) from 2-point range.

When it came to trying to sink 3-pointers, the Bucs followed up a 1 of 14 performance in the first half by making only 1 of 11 attempts in the second half. Their combined total resulted in an eight percent success rate (2 of 25).

Waseca made 45 percent of their 3-point attempts (9 of 20).

The Bucs and the Bluejays each shot eight free throws during the game. BEA made three of their shots and Waseca made six.

The Bluejays led the Bucs in rebounding by a 37-27 margin and scored 19 points off of turnovers compared to only four for the Maroon and Gold.

Waseca had 13 steals to four for BEA and committed only 10 turnovers to the Bucs’ 18.

Lloyd was the only player to reach double figures in scoring. He finished with 10 points. Bromeland came off the bench to score nine points and Austin Skaden added seven.

Lloyd also led BEA with eight rebounds followed by Jack Norman with six.

BEA played at New Ulm on Feb. 10. They will host Tri-City United in Blue Earth on Feb. 14.

Look for the results of those games in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
