They defeat Jayhawks before falling to top-seeded Medford Tigers

After defeating the Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks in a play-in match, the No. 8-seeded Blue Earth Area Buccaneers faced the top-seeded Medford Tigers on Feb. 16, in Medford.

The Tigers showed why they are the No. 1-seeded team with their 56-18 win over the Bucs.

Timmy Nagel’s pin in 3:09 against the Tigers’ Evan Noble at 106 pounds gave the Bucs an early 6-0 lead.

Medford tied the score 6-6 when Luis Lopez won at 113 pounds with a pin over BEA’s Colton Tolzman.

At 120 pounds, Kaden Hoffmann pinned BEA’s Drake Engelby in 2:18 to put Medford on top 12-6.

The Tigers made it 15-6 when 126-pounder Jack Meyer won a 5-2 decision over Carson Sturtz.

A 16-4 major decision by the Tigers’ Tommy Elwood over Angel Martinez at 132 pounds increased Medford’s lead to 19-6.

BEA’s Cooper Peterson pinned Tyler Underdahl in 37 seconds in the 138-pound match to cut Medford’s advantage to 19-12.

A pin by the Tigers’ Evan Schweisthal over Will Weerts in 43 seconds at 145 pounds put the home team on top 25-12.

Medford went up 29-12 with a 9-0 major decision victory by Garron Hoffman over Blair Lunz in the 152-pound match.

At 160 pounds, BEA’s Kade Gaydon pinned Chase Balzer in 58 seconds. The score was now 29-18 in favor of Medford.

Tate Hermes won a hard-fought 6-0 decision over Parker Meyers in the 170-pound match which put Medford on top 32-18.

The Bucs forfeited the next three matches at 182, 195 and 220 pounds.

Medford’s 285-pounder Mason Degrood pinned Zach Benson in 3:03 to make the final score 56-18.

BEA 60, M/T/ML 9

In a play-in match to determine who would face the No. 1-seeded Medford Tigers, Blue Earth Area’s Timmy Nagel, Colton Tolzman and Drake Engelby won the first three matches against the Jayhawks of Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther by forfeits and the Buccaneers went on to triumph over the Jayhawks 60-9. The meet took place in Medford on Thursday, Feb. 16.

At 126 pounds, BEA’s Carson Sturtz kept the momentum going when he pinned Noah Davila in 3:34.

The Bucs’ Angel Martinez won by a forfeit at 132 pounds and Cooper Peterson pinned Christian Arroyo in 3:02 at 138 pounds to extend BEA’s lead to 36-0.

A 7-3 decision by the Jayhawks’ Carlos Flores-Lemus over Will Weerts in the 145-pound match made the score 36-3 in favor of the Bucs.

BEA won the next three matches by pins.

Blair Lunz needed 2:36 to win his 152-pound match with a fall over Blayne Wilde. Kade Gaydon’s pin of Kolton Tande at 160 pounds took only 59 seconds and 170-pounder Parker Meyers earned a fall over Logan Slater in 1:45. BEA’s advantage was now 54-3.

BEA forfeited to M/T/ML at 182 pounds. There were double forfeits at 195 and 220 pounds. The Bucs’ Zach Benson received a forfeit at 285 pounds to make the final score 60-9 in favor of BEA.

WEM/JWP Quadrangular

Blue Earth Area wrestled in the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Quadrangular on Thursday, Feb. 9, and came home with a 0-3 record.

“We gave up too many forfeits,” BEA coach Dan Eckhardt said. “We could have won two, or maybe all three of the matches if we would have been able to have everyone here. The guys have been wrestling well but we are not getting the wins to show it.”

The Bucs’ losses were to Cannon Falls, WEM/JWP and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.

Cannon Falls 37, BEA 27

The Bucs forfeited three matches at 152, 170 and 195 pounds in a 37-27 loss to the Cannon Falls Bombers. There was a double forfeit at 220 pounds.

BEA’s Timmy Nagel was pinned in the 106-pound match by Adam Parish but the Bucs’ Colton Tolzmann won by a fall over Caiden Walrod at 113 pounds to even the team score at 6-6.

The Bombers won the next two matches to increase their lead to 16-6. Ethan Albers defeated the Bucs’ Drake Engelby by a fall and Calvin Singewald won by an 11-2 major decision over BEA’s Carson Sturtz.

The Maroon and Gold won the next three matches to take an 18-16 lead. Angel Martinez pinned Griffin Peterson at 132 pounds, Cooper Peterson won a 7-6 decision over Jonathon Opel at 138 pounds and Blair Lunz won by a 7-3 decision over Lucas Freeberg.

Cannon Falls won by a forfeit at 152 pounds before the Bombers’ Colten Black was victorious by a 7-1 decision at 160 pounds. Another forfeit by the Bucs at 170 pounds put the Bombers back on top 31-18.

BEA’s Parker Meyers won by a 5-3 decision over Tristan Zingler before the Bucs forfeited the match at 195 pounds.

Following a double forfeit at 220 pounds, BEA’s Zach Benson pinned Nick Barrett in the 285-pound match to make the final score 37-27 in favor of Cannon Falls.

WEM/JWP 39, BEA 36

The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Buccaneers rallied from a 36-21 deficit to defeat BEA 39-36.

Once again, BEA having to forfeit two matches was a major factor in the final outcome.

WEM/JWP jumped out to a 16-0 lead. Their first points came when Brady Murphy pinned Timmy Nagel at 106 pounds. Parker James made it 10-0 when he earned a technical fall over Colton Tolzmann at 113. Carson Petry’s pin of Drake Engelby at 120 pounds made it 16-0.

BEA won the next three matches by falls to go on top 18-16. Carson Sturtz pinned Carson James at 126 pounds, Angel Martinez pinned Jaxon Hulsing at 132 and Cooper Peterson won by a fall over Kelton Erler at 138 to give the Maroon and Gold their first lead of the match.

A technical fall by WEM/JWP’s Lucas Morsching over Will Weerts at 145 pounds put WEM/JWP back on top 21-18.

Pins by BEA’s Blair Lunz at 152 pounds, Kade Gaydon at 160 and Parker Meyers at 180 vaulted BEA into a 36-21 lead.

There was no match at 170 pounds due to a double forfeit.

WEM/JWP won by forfeits at 195 and 220 pounds and No. 6-ranked Keegan Kuball sealed the victory for WEM/JWP when he pinned BEA’s Zach Benson to make the final score 39-36.

NRHEG 45, BEA 36

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva took advantage of four Blue Earth Area forfeits and the Panthers downed the Bucs 45-36.

NRHEG took a 6-0 lead when BEA forfeited the match at 106 pounds, but the Bucs’ Timmy Nagel received a forfeit at 113 pounds to tie the score at 6-6.

Annabelle Petsinger’s pin of Drake Engelby at 120 pounds put the Panthers back on top 12-6 before Carson Sturtz tied the score at 12-12 when he put Parker Bunn’s shoulders to the mat in the 126-pound match.

BEA took their first lead of the contest at 18-12 when 132 pounder Angel Martinez won by a fall over Devin Parpart. Cooper Peterson increased the Bucs’ lead to 24-12 when he pinned Aidan Schlaak at 138 pounds.

Ryan Schlaak’s pin of Will Weerts at 145 pounds and Reese Routh’s win by a fall over Blair Lunz at 152 pounds gave the Panthers nine team points and narrowed BEA’s lead to 24-21.

Kade Gaydon increased the Bucs’ lead to 30-21 when he pinned Wyatt Larson at 160 pounds.

NRHEG won by a forfeit at 170 pounds to make the score 30-27 in favor of the Bucs.

BEA’s Parker Meyers won by a fall over Zander Flatness at 182 pounds to make the score 36-27 with the Bucs in the lead.

The Panthers received forfeits at 195 and 220 pounds to retake the lead 39-36.

NRHEG’s No. 3-ranked Makota Misgen won by a fall over Zach Benson in the 285-pound match to give the Panthers a 45-36 victory.
