Buc girls win OT thriller over Tigers

BEA falls 62-49 to Redwood Valley and by 64-38 to GHEC/T/ML

The Blue Earth Area girls’ basketball team downed the Medford Tigers in an overtime thriller on Monday night, Feb. 20.

The BEA Buccaneers jumped out to a big 36-12 lead at the end of the first half, but the Tigers of Medford came roaring back in the second half, outscoring the Bucs 45-21.

That tied the score at 57-all at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, BEA outscored Medford 7-4 to take the hard-earned 64-61 victory.

The Bucs had four players reach double figures in the scoring column.

Lola Lundquist had a great night and led the Buccaneers with 22 points. She also had five rebounds and four assists.

Sophie Keister and Kate Armon both had 15 points. Keister had a double-double and led the team with 22 rebounds. Armon had six assists and two steals.

Erika Gaydon added 10 points to the team tally, and also had four rebounds and five assists. Chloe Groe had two points and five rebounds.

As a team the Bucs made 13 of 29 2-point attempts (45 percent) and 10 of 27 3-pointers (37 percent). They also were 8 of 15 from the free-throw line (53 percent).

The Tigers were 8 of 39 for 2-pointers (21 percent), 9 of 25 for 3-pointers (36 percent) and 18 of 34 from the line.

The Bucs had 42 rebounds, but the Tigers had 45. BEA had three steals to their eight, two blocks to their none and 17 turnovers to their 12.

Next up for the BEA Buccaneer girls is the start of Sub-section play on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Redwood Valley 62, BEA 49

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team put up a good fight when they faced the Redwood Valley Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 18.

However, in the end the Cardinals defeated the Buccaneers by a score of 62-49.

The game was played in Windom, and was part of the Big South Conference Showcase.

Three Buc players hit double figures for scoring.

Lola Lundquist led the Bucs with 17 points as well as grabbing six rebounds and having three assists.

Erica Gaydon added 12 points for BEA while Sophie Keister was right behind with 11 points. Keister also had six rebounds for the Bucs. Kate Armon scored seven points, as well as having three assists.

The Bucs were next set to play Medford on Monday, Feb. 20.

GHEC/T/ML 64, BEA 38

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team played fairly even with the Jaguars of Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther in the first half, but the Buccaneers fell off in the second half and lost 64-38 on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Bucs trailed 36-25 at the end of the first half, but then could only score 13 in the second half, while the Jaguars netted 28.

The Buccaneers shot just 21 percent for 2-pointers, 4 of 19, while the Jaguars were 41 percent, 22 of 54.

The Bucs were able to connect on more threes, hitting 9 of 28 of their 3-point shots for 32 percent, while the Jags were 5 of 10 for 50 percent.

BEA was 3 of 10 for free throws (30 percent) and GHEC/T/ML was 5 of 10 (50 percent).

Leading the way for BEA was Erika Gayden with 18 points. Sophie Keister added nine points, Chloe Groe had four, Lola Lundquist three and Kate Armon and Grace Schavey each had two.

Keister led the team in rebounds with 10.

The Jaguars were led by Olivia Mattson with 23 points and McKenna Benck with 16.

The Bucs had 33 rebounds and the Jaguars had 39. BEA had 12 assists to their 16, eight steals to their 17, 27 turnovers to their 17 and nine personal fouls to their 15.

Next up for the Buccaneers was a game set for Monday, Feb. 20 against Medford.
