USC boys crush Medford 80-44

By Chuck Hunt - Editor | Feb 26, 2023

USC Rebels’ player Johnny Martinez gets fouled while trying to make a play in a recent boys game.

The United South Central Rebels used a huge first half to overpower the Medford Tigers in a game on Friday, Feb. 17, in Medford. And the Rebels’ second half was not bad either.

USC won the game 80-44, after leading at the end of the first half 43-18.

“Zale Bushlack knocked down three first half 3-pointers to help him score 26 of his game high 34 points in the first half,” coach Adam Walker said. “Nick Bushlack and Johnny Martinez contributed with eight a piece and Taybor Conley added a free throw to round out the first half scoring.”

Strong defense led to the Rebels really blowing the game open early in the second half, the coach added.

“Johnny Martinez hit two 3-pointers along with five buckets in transition for 16 second half points,” Walker said. “And the Rebels were able to clear the benches at about the nine minute mark.”

Besides Zale Bushlack’s 34 points, he had a double-double with 16 rebounds, also.

Two other Rebels hit double figures in scoring. Johnny Martinez had 24 points and Nick Bushlack had 10. Conley added seven points, as well as eight rebounds.

As a team the Rebels were 30 of 52 for 2-pointers (58 percent) and 6 of 19 for 3-pointers (32 percent). From the free-throw line they made 2 of 5 tries (40 percent).

The Tigers were 11 of 28 for 2-pointers (39 percent), 5 of 17 for 3-pointers (29 percent) and 7 of 15 for free-throw attempts (47 percent).

USC outrebounded Medford 44 to 18. The Rebels had 23 assists to the Tigers’ nine, 10 steals to their seven, six blocks to their one and eight turnovers to their 16.

The Rebels’ game against Madelia, which had been set for Tuesday, Feb. 21, was postponed due to weather to this Tuesday, Feb. 28.

A USC boys game against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday, Feb. 24 was still on the schedule as of this week’s deadline. A story on that game will be included in the next edition of the Faribault County Register.
