The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers lost two one-run games when they traveled to Pipestone to take on the Arrows in a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday, May 16.

Pipestone 8, BEA 7

With the game tied 7-7 and BEA batting in the top of the seventh inning, the Bucs loaded the bases with zero outs but failed to score when their next three batters hit infield grounders.

“That pretty much sums up how our day went,” BEA coach Paul Nienaber said.

The Bucs got off to a fast start when they scored two runs in the top of the first inning.

Soren Fering led off the game with a double and scored when the next batter, Caleb Langager, also doubled.

A single by Parker Meyers sent Langager to third base and he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Abe Kokos.

BEA increased their lead to 5-0 after batting in the top of the third inning.

Meyers led off the inning with a single. A single by Nick Barke and an error on the play allowed Meyers to take third base while Barke ended up on second.

Both runners came home when Kokos doubled to center field.

A single by Taylor Davids and a sacrifice fly by Colton Hubly brought Kokos home with the third run of the inning to give BEA a 5-0 lead.

Pipestone responded in the bottom of the third inning with three runs to cut the Bucs’ lead to 5-3.

After holding BEA scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, Pipestone scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bucs scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to leapfrog over the Arrows and go on top 7-6.

Pipestone tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the game when they scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Meyers and Davids each had two hits for the Bucs. Fering, Langager, Kokos and Meyers all had doubles for BEA.

Kokos started on the mound and gave up a total of six runs with only four runs being earned. He allowed three hits while walking four batters and striking out three in three and one third innings of work.

Soren Fering worked one and two thirds innings and did not allow any runs while giving up three hits, walking one batter and striking out one.

Davids was charged with the loss after giving up two runs, one which was earned, in one and one third innings. He allowed three hits and struck out one batter. He did not allow any walks.

Pipestone 8, BEA 5

The Arrows completed the sweep of the doubleheader when they defeated the Bucs 8-5 in the second game.

“We left enough men on base today to populate a small village,” BEA coach Paul Nienaber said. “Between the two games, we left the bases loaded five times. We just couldn’t get the clutch hit today when we needed it.”

Individual statistics were not available for this game.

BEA 14, St. James 5

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers amassed 15 hits on their way to a 14-5 triumph over the host St. James Saints in baseball action on Monday, May 15.

The Bucs scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning when they pushed eight runs across the plate.

Singles by Soren Fering, Caleb Langager and Parker Meyers loaded the bases.

The Saints recorded an out on a foul-tip strike out before Abe Kokos singled sharply to center field to bring home Fering with the first run of the game.

With the bases still loaded, an error by the Saints’ third baseman allowed Taylor Davids to reach first base safely while Langager touched home plate for BEA’s second run of the inning.

A strike out gave the Saints their second out of the inning. Levi Osborn then stepped to the plate and ripped a line drive single to center field to score both Meyers and Kokos and give BEA a 4-0 lead.

A walk to Carson Sturtz loaded the bases again and brought up Soren Fering for the second time in the inning.

Fering singled to right field to drive in both Davids and Osborn and advance Matthew Klabunde, who was the courtesy runner for Sturtz, to third base.

The Bucs then executed a double steal with Fering gaining second base and Klabunde going home with the seventh run of the inning.

An error on a ball hit by Langager resulted in Fering reaching home to put BEA on top 8-0.

The Bucs would add three more runs in the top of the second inning along with two runs in the top of the sixth and a final run in the top of the seventh to account for their 14 runs.

Fering went 4-for-5 for the game and drove in three runs.

Colton Hubly went 2-for-4, including a 2-run homer in the sixth inning, to drive in four runs. Osborn drove in two runs on one hit.

Meyers and Kokos also had multiple-hit games with two hits each.

Kokos pitched the first inning and did not give up any hits or runs. He walked four batters and struck out one. He escaped any damage when a Saints runner was thrown out trying to steal home.

Noah Dahl relieved Kokos to start the second inning and was credited with the win after pitching five and one third innings. He allowed five hits, six walks and struck out five batters. He was charged with five runs but only two were earned.

Fering came into the game with one out in the seventh inning and struck out the last two batters to end the game.

BEA 9, ML/GHEC 0

Taylor Davids was superb on the mound for Blue Earth Area, tossing a no-hitter against the Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars in a game played in Truman on Thursday, May 11.

Davids pitched all seven innings. He did not allow a walk and struck out eight batters. The Bucs did commit two errors during the contest.

Five different BEA batters each had two hits in their 15-hit attack against the Jags. Those five batters were Soren Fering, Caleb Langager, Nick Barke, Abe Kokos and Levi Osborn. Fering and Langager each drove in two runs during the game.
