Tennis team goes 2-1 during last week

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers slammed the Pipestone Area Arrows with a 7-0 victory at a tennis match held on Tuesday, May 16.
The Bucs’ four straight wins at singles preceded three forfeitures at doubles by the Arrows, and improved BEA’s season record to 5-3.
BEA’s Joe Frundt led off the singles victories with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Pipestone’s Makhi Winter at No. 1 singles. Jamie Johnson scored another win at No. 2 singles against Arrow Lucas Zupp, 6-1, 6-1.
Buc Brady Lorenz faced Arrow Cody Norberg at No. 3 singles, and emerged with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, Devin Haase won his No. 4 singles match against Pipestone’s Chase Wilson, 6-0, 6-2.
Bucs Ryder Dutton and Mitchell Stevermer won by forfeiture at No. 1 doubles, as did No. 2 doubles players Seth Mathews and Gustavo Chavero, and No. 3 doubles players Blaine Grack and Noah Hanson.
The boys tennis Varsity Section Team Quarter Finals were slated for Thursday, May 18, with the winning team advancing to the Varsity Section Team Semi-Finals and Finals on Monday, May 22, at Gustavus Adolphus College.

St. James 4, BEA 3
The BEA boys tennis team suffered a narrow loss to the St. James Saints, 4-3, at a match held on Monday, May 15.
The Bucs scored two wins at singles, with Joe Frundt defeating Saint Andrei Rivera, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and BEA’s Brady Lorenz taking St. James’ Zech Ciske, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
Buc Jamie Johnson lost a hard-fought match against Brennan Kern at No. 2 singles. Kern took the first set, 6-2, but Johnson scored a 6-3 victory in the second set. The third set went to Kern, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, BEA’s Devin Haase was defeated by St. James’ Quinton Kern, 6-3, 6-1.
No. 1 doubles brought another victory for St. James when Vince Brown and Caleb Fast defeated Bucs Ryder Dutton and Mitchell Stevermer, 6-2, 7-5.
No. 2 doubles brought a win for the Bucs, though. Seth Mathews and Gustavo Chavero defeated Saints Devon Olson and Dylan Reid, 6-3, 6-4.
St. James scored a final win at No. 3 doubles when Rylan Meyer and Juan Cervantes defeated Bucs Blaine Grack and Noah Hanson narrowly, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
BEA 4, Fairmont 3
The Bucs edged out their I-90 rivals on Thursday, May 11, with a narrow 4-3 win over the Fairmont Cardinals.
A close match at No. 1 singles was eventually settled in Fairmont’s favor. BEA’s Joe Frundt won the first set, 6-4, but lost the second and third sets, 6-2 and 7-5, to Cardinal Jack Hagen.
Jamie Johnson turned the tables at No. 2 singles when he beat Fairmont’s Dominick Lund-May in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Buc Brady Lorenz brought another victory at No. 3 singles against Cardinal Noah Vetter, 6-0, 6-3.
At No. 4 singles, BEA’s Devin Haase scored a win for the Bucs against Fairmont’s Sebastian Castro, 6-4, 6-1.
Fairmont made a comeback at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. No. 1 doubles players Ryder Dutton and Mitchell Stevermer suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Cardinals Carter Quist and Olivia Ortega.
Bucs Seth Mathews and Gustavo Chavero were also beat at No. 2 doubles, losing in straight sets to Tyler Slama and Anthony Stegge, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 3 doubles brought a final victory for BEA, however, when Blaine Grack and Noah Hanson scored a narrow win over Fairmont’s Wylee Frederiksen and Simone Castro, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
