Rebels fall to Knights in pitchers’ duel
After scoring 26 runs in two victories against the JWP Bulldogs

The United South Central softball team lost a real heartbreaker on Tuesday, May 23, when they faced off against the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights in Kenyon.
The Rebel girls lost 1-0. It was a real pitchers’ duel, with USC’s Mariah Anderson allowing just two hits while striking out 16 batters and walking just one. The Knights’ Josie Flom allowed just one USC hit, while striking out 14 Rebel batters and issuing no walks.
Flom also scored K-W’s only run by hitting a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.
It was Molly Wegner who got USC’s only hit in the game.
USC 16, JWP 1
For the second time in less than a week, the United South Central softball team faced off against the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs and claimed a commanding 16-1 victory on Monday, May 22.
JWP scored one run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. However, USC scored a run in the bottom of the first to tie up the game.
Then the Rebels got the hot bats going at the plate. They scored six runs in the second inning and seven more in the third inning for a 14-1 lead.
After they added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, the game was over and the Rebels notched a 16-1 victory.
USC had 12 hits in the game, to JWP’s one hit.
Kendal Harpestad led the Rebel barrage, going 3 for 4 at the plate. Molly Wegner and Brylee Neubauer each had two hits, and Mariah Anderson, Taylor Schroeder, Olivia Bungum, Alivia Bruegger and Ivy O’Rourke each had one hit.
Wegner, Anderson, and Bungum all hit a double and Harpestad had two doubles.
Anderson pitched all seven innings and gave up the one run on one hit. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
USC 10, JWP 1
The USC Rebel softball team trailed the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs for four innings, but then captured a big 10-1 victory on Thursday, May 18 in Janesville.
JWP scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and kept that slim lead until the top of the fifth inning when USC scored twice for a 2-1 lead.
The Rebels would score seven runs in the top of the sixth to build up the lead, and one more run in the seventh to clinch the win.
The Rebels outhit the Bulldogs 12 to five in the game. Olivia Bungum led USC going 3 for 4 at the plate, including a double.
Mariah Anderson had two hits including a triple, Taylor Schroeder had two hits including a double, Riley Getchell had two hits including a double, and Alivia Bruegger had two hits. Ivy O’Rouke also had one hit.
Mariah Anderson went all seven innings on the mound and gave up the one run on five hits. She walked three batters and struck out 13.
