Errors lead to Bucs exiting the playoffs
Shortstop Parker Meyers catches a pop fly during BEA’s game against Waseca on June 6.
It was a tough way to end the season for the Blue Earth Area baseball team when they were defeated by the Waseca Bluejays 6-4 in a Section 2AA elimination game on Tuesday, in Waseca.
The loss was tough because of the five errors the Bucs committed and because of a controversial call which cost the Bucs a run which would have tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.
“Well, you normally should not expect to win the game when you make five errors,” BEA coach Paul Nienaber said. “But, give these guys credit, they kept their heads up and continued to fight. I am proud of them.”
Neither defense was sharp, especially in the opening innings. In fact, out of the 10 runs scored in the game, only one was earned.
The Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Nick Barke reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Taylor Davids.
Colton Hubly reached on another error which allowed Matthew Klabunde, who was running for Davids, to advance to third base.
A sharp single to left field brought Davids home with the Bucs’ second run.
Waseca responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Bucs took advantage of two more Waseca errors in the top of the third inning to score two runs and reclaim the lead at 4-3.
Caleb Langager led off with a single between the shortstop and third baseman. Parker Meyers walked and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.
Abe Kokos hit a grounder that was misplayed by the third baseman which allowed Langager to score and Meyers to reach third base. Davids hit into a fielder’s choice to score Meyers and put BEA on top 4-3.
The Bluejays regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored twice to take a 5-4 lead.
The Bucs had loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning when pinch hitter Peyton O’Hara hit a grounder to the shortstop who threw to the second baseman for a force out. The second baseman’s relay to first did not appear to be close to getting O’Hara out and the Bucs’ bench cheered as they thought they had tied the game at 5-5. However, their celebration ended in shock when the field umpire ruled O’Hara out.
Waseca added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Bucs went down in order in the top of the seventh to give the Bluejays the 6-4 victory.
In the game that followed later that evening, Belle Plaine knocked Waseca out of the playoffs by defeating the Bluejays 3-1.
After starting out their season with a record of six wins and 11 losses, the Bucs won five out of their last seven games to finish the season with a record of 11-13.
BEA 7, Sibley East 2
The Bucs avoided being eliminated from the Section 2AA playoffs by defeating the Sibley East Wolverines 7-2 on Saturday, June 3, in a game played at Waseca.
The win by the Bucs eliminated the Wolverines from the playoffs.
Sibley East scored single runs in the first and third innings while BEA plated four runs in the third inning, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to account for their seven runs.
No individual statistics were available for the game.
