The umpire gets a good look at the play at home plate when Carter Rosenau of Blue Earth/Winnebago is tagged out by USC Legions catcher Byron Getchell. BE/W would go on to win the game 8-2 and improve their record to 4-0.

The USC Legions hosted Blue Earth/Winnebago in American Legion baseball in Wells on Monday, June 19.

The Legions, who came into the game with a record of three wins and one loss, scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

BE/W tied the game in the top of the second inning and took the lead for good when they added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on their way to an 8-2 victory. The win improves BE/W’s record to 4-0.

“You know that any team coached by (Legions’ coach) Pat Frank is going to be fundamentally sound,” BE/W coach Paul Nienaber said after the game. “They played small ball in the first inning and got two runs out of it.”

Nienaber was happy with the pitching performance of BE/W pitcher Taylor Davids who only allowed two hits in picking up the complete-game victory.

“Taylor found his groove after the first inning and pitched a good game,” Nienaber added.

BE/W scored both of their runs in the second inning with two outs. Nick Barke singled and scored on a double by Davids. A double by Colton Hubly plated Davids and tied the game at 2-2.

Barke got things started for BE/W in the top of the fourth inning when he singled and stole second base. A single by Davids allowed Barke to advance to third base.

A single by Hubly scored Barke, Davids tried to score but was thrown out at home with Hubly advancing to second base on the throw. A single by Soren Fering plated Hubly and put BE/W on top 4-2.

Parker Meyers led off the top of the fifth inning with a single. He stole second base and eventually scored on an infield error on a ground ball by Abe Kokos. The run by Meyers put BE/W ahead 5-2.

The final three runs by BE/W came in the top of the seventh inning.

Walks to Barke and Kokos were followed with a single by Davids to load the bases. Hubly singled to drive in Barke and Kokos. Davids scored the third run of the inning when Carson Sturtz hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Hubly finished the game with three hits in four trips to the plate and four runs batted in. Davids also had three hits while Meyers and Barke each had two.

Davids was charged with two earned runs on two hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Zale Bushlack took the loss for the Legions. He gave up seven runs, six earned in six innings of work. He allowed nine hits, walked four batters and struck out four.

BE/W 14, Welcome 3

A 10-run first inning which included a grand slam home run by Parker Meyers helped the visiting Blue Earth/Winnebago American Legion baseball team coast to a 14-3 victory over Welcome in action on Thursday, July 15. With the win, BE/W improves to three wins and zero losses for the season.

Soren Fering and Caleb Langager both walked to start the game. Parker Meyers hit into a fielder’s choice to force out Fering at third base before Logan O’Hara walked to load the bases.

Another walk, this time to Nick Barke, allowed Langager to score the first run of the game.

A single to left field by Abe Kokos drove in Meyers and O’Hara and left runners on first and second base.

Taylor Davids popped out to the second baseman for the second out of the inning before Carson Sturtz walked to reload the bases.

With Colton Hubly at the plate, Barke scored on a wild pitch while Kokos ended up on third base and Sturtz moved to second.

A line drive single to left by Hubly drove in Kokos and Sturtz and gave BE/W a 6-0 lead.

Coming to the plate for the second time in the inning, Fering singled to left. An error by the left fielder allowed Hubly to move to third base while Fering advanced to second.

A walk to Langager loaded the bases again. Meyers made the score 10-0 when he homered over the left field fence.
