BEA, USC play in early-season tourneys
Glencoe-Silver Lake Quadrangular
The Blue Earth Area (BEA) and United South Central (USC) girls tennis teams traveled to Glencoe-Silver Lake High School bright and early on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 22, to participate in a quadrangular tournament hosted by the Panthers.
Due to extreme weather conditions, the tournament was held in an eight-game pro set format, with each match decided by one eight-point set. A few matches were cut short at two points due to excessive heat.
Apart from Glencoe-Silver Lake, the Bucs and the Rebels also faced off against the Sibley East-Arlington Wolverines.

Glencoe-Silver Lake 2
The Bucs emerged victorious when they faced their host team, tallying a 5-2 win over the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers.
Addison Armstrong represented the Bucs against Anna Sievert at No. 1 singles, booking an 8-3 win over her opponent.
The tide turned at No. 2 singles, however, when BEA’s Olivia Dutton was defeated, 8-3, by Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Lydia Simons.
The Bucs bounced back at No. 3 singles with Grace Hanson’s 8-4 win over Panther Jadyn Stuewe, and BEA’s Abbey Lorenz continued the winning streak when she defeated Aby Smith, 8-5, at No. 4 singles.
No. 1 doubles brought another win for BEA when Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinkner tallied an 8-3 victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Mariah Gutknecht and Eva Stuewe.
However, the Panthers clawed a win at No. 2 doubles when Abigail Ziegler and Sophie Groe defeated Bucs Lauren Survis and McKinley Hanson in a close match, 9-8 (5).
BEA brought in a final win at No. 3 doubles. Bucs Addison Prescher and Erin Prescher shut out Panthers Audrey Howell and Gabi Hudson in an 8-0 victory.

Sibley East-Arlington 1
The Bucs bested the Wolverines, 6-1, when the two teams faced off at Glencoe-Silver Lake.
No. 1 and No. 2 singles started BEA off with two consecutive wins. Addison Armstrong defeated Sibley East-Arlington’s Morgan Johnson, 8-1, at the top singles slot, and BEA’s Olivia Dutton scored a narrow victory over Morgan Haggenmiller, 9-8 (5), at No. 2 singles.
The Wolverines’ Jada Henke secured a win at No. 3 singles over Buc Grace Hanson, 8-4, but the Bucs were back at No. 4 singles with Abbey Lorenz’s 8-3 win over Hannah Bartlette.
BEA swept the board in doubles, with No. 1 doubles players Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinker booking an 8-4 win over Sibley East-Arlington’s Jadyn Krueger and Morgan Bednarek.
Bucs Lauren Survis and McKinley Hanson were victorious at No. 2 doubles, slating an 8-3 win over Wolverines Macey Thoele and Tessa McCracken, and BEA’s Addison Prescher and Erin Prescher defeated Taylor Moos and Addie Cowell, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.
BEA 5, USC 2
When Faribault County’s own Bucs and Rebels faced off on Aug. 22, BEA took home the win, 5-2.
BEA’s Addison Armstrong and USC’s Ivy O’Rourke competed at No. 1 singles, with Armstrong defeating O’Rourke 8-1.
The Bucs took the rest of the singles victories as well. Grace Hanson defeated Rebel Julianna Clore, 8-1, at No. 2 singles, and BEA’s Abbey Lorenz was the victor, 2-0, over Caitlin Rheingans at No. 3 singles.
Addison Prescher brought the Bucs’ final singles win at the No. 4 slot when she defeated Kylee Koziolek, 8-1.
Olivia Dutton got in on the No. 1 doubles action with Lauren Survis, scoring a 2-0 win over Rebels Addison Mithun and Olivia Bungum.
USC took home the win at No. 2 doubles, however, when Brylee Nuebauer and Lauren Hansen defeated Bucs Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinkner, 8-5.
No. 3 doubles brought another victory for the Rebels when Maya Hansen and Eva Hernandez beat Erin Prescher and McKinley Hanson, 2-0.
Glencoe-Silver Lake 4, USC 3
It was a close call, but the Panthers edged by the Rebels for a 4-3 win on Aug. 22.
Brylee Nuebauer represented the Rebels at No. 1 singles against Anna Sievert and was defeated 8-4 by her opponent. USC’s Lauren Hansen also suffered a close, 9-7 loss at No. 2 singles against Abigail Christensen.
USC turned things around at No. 3 singles when Ivy O’Rourke booked an 8-2 win for the Rebels against Jadyn Stuewe. Eva Hernandez tallied another victory at No. 4 singles over Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Aby Smith, 8-2.
Rebels Addison Mithun and Olivia Bungum teamed up against Panthers Lydia Simons and Mariah Gutknecht at No. 1 doubles. The match went to Glencoe-Silver Lake, 8-3.
The Panthers secured a final victory at No. 2 doubles when Sophie Groe and Eva Stuewe defeated USC’s Maya Hansen and Julianna Clore, 8-5.
The Rebels took the final doubles match, however. No. 3 doubles players Claire Schimek and Caitlin Rheingans secured an 8-1 victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Audrey Howell and Summer Blazinski.
USC 4,
Sibley East-Arlington 3
Another close match ensued when the Rebels faced the Wolverines, but this time it was USC who snagged the 4-3 win.
Brylee Nuebauer returned to the No. 1 singles court, and she booked USC’s first victory over Sibley East-Arlington by defeating Morgan Johnson, 8-3.
The Wolverines fought back at No. 2 singles, however, and Morgan Haggenmiller got the better of Maya Hansen, 8-3. Sibley East-Arlington’s winning streak continued at No. 3 singles with Jada Henke’s 8-6 win over USC’s Olivia Bungum.
Rebel Ivy O’Rourke evened the score at No. 4 singles when she defeated Hannah Bartlette, 8-5.
No. 1 and No. 2 doubles also went to USC. Rebels Addison Mithun and Lauren Hansen narrowly defeated Wolverines Morgan Bednarek and Jaden Krueger, 8-6, and Eva Hernandez and Caitlin Rheingans booked a close victory, 8-6, over Wolverines Tessa McCracken and Macey Thoele.
The final match at No. 3 doubles went to Sibley East-Arlington when Addie Cowell and Taylor Moos tallied an 8-2 win over USC’s Julianna Clore and Claire Schimek.
St. James Tournament
The Blue Earth Area (BEA) Buccaneers played their first tennis tournament of the season on Friday, Aug. 18.
The St. Peter, Pine City and host St. James tennis teams – some of the Bucs’ top competitors - proved formidable opponents, but BEA put up a good fight and booked three straight wins at No. 3 singles, a No. 1 singles win and a victory at No. 3 doubles.
St. Peter 6, BEA 1
Buc Addison Armstrong assumed the No. 1 singles slot on Aug. 18, where she faced off against St. Peter’s Annika Southworth. The match went to the Saints in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. St. Peter’s Rhyan Holmgren pulled off another win at No. 2 singles against BEA’s Olivia Dutton, 6-4, 6-0.
Buc Grace Hanson booked a win for the maroon and gold at No. 3 singles, where she played Saint Ella Dirks. Hanson came back from a 7-5 loss in the first set with a 6-4 victory in the second set, and finished off the match with a 10-6 win in the third set.
St. Peter won the final singles match when their No. 4 singles player, Brielle Romasiewicz, defeated BEA’s Addison Prescher. The first set went to Prescher, 6-4, but Romasiewicz took the second set, 7-5, and the third set, 10-6.
Bucs Carol Schraeder and Ashlyn Klinkner teamed up at No. 1 doubles against Saints Zetta Haugen and Kylie Southworth. The match went to the Saints in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
It was BEA’s Lauren Survis and McKinley Hanson up against St. Peter’s Nora Whipps and Kali Erickson at No. 2 doubles. The first set went to the Bucs, 6-3, but the Saints took the remaining two sets, 6-4 and 8-1.
Erin Prescher and Abby Lorenz represented BEA on the No. 3 doubles court against Callie Voeltz and Alex Matarrese. The match went to the Saints, 6-3, 6-3.
Pine City 5, BEA 2
At No. 1 singles, Addison Armstrong was the first Buc to take on a Dragon. Pine City’s Brooke Boland proved a formidable opponent, taking the match 6-2, 6-0.
No. 2 singles was more contentious. Pine City’s Lena Roubinek won the first set, 6-3, but her second set against Olivia Dutton was tied up at 6-6. The tiebreaking third set settled the match in Pine City’s favor, 7-3.
Grace Hanson brought another win for the Bucs at No. 3 singles, defeating Dragon Lily Struss 6-1, 6-4. However, the No. 4 singles match went to Pine City when Alana Linnell defeated BEA’s Abbey Lorenz 6-4, 6-1.
Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinkner went up against Pine City’s Malia Mikyska and Allison Unverzagt at No. 1 doubles, and suffered a 6-0, 6-4 loss to the Dragons.
BEA’s Lauren Survis and McKinley Hanson were also defeated at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-1, by Dragons Brenna Youngbauer and Lexa Valvoda. Bucs Erin Prescher and Addison Prescher booked a win at No. 3 doubles against Kate Unverzagt and Vivian Lahti, 6-2, 6-2.
St. James 5, BEA 2
Addison Armstrong and St. James’ Allison Bluedorn fought a close match at No. 1 singles, but Armstrong ultimately took the win, 6-1, 3-6, 6-5.
The Saints fought back at No. 2 singles, and Keyana Haler defeated BEA’s Olivia Dutton in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Grace Hanson continued her winning streak at No. 3 singles with her 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Saint Maya Kuseth.
When Abbey Lorenz and St. James’ Lily Ciske faced off at No. 4 singles, the Saints took the match, 7-6, 6-2.
Bucs Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinkner took the court at No. 1 doubles against Saints Alexis Brekken and Elizabeth Shores. It was a victory for St. James, 6-4, 6-3.
Bucs Lauren Survis and McKinley Hanson were also defeated at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 7-5, by Saints Mykela Hanson and Daney Tradepo.
St. James tallied a final win at No. 3 doubles when BEA’s Erin Prescher and Addison Prescher were defeated by Saints Ellis Anderson and Alivia Romsidon, 6-1, 6-4.
This week marked the very beginning of the Bucs’ tennis season. They were slated to play Redwood Valley in an away match on Thursday, Aug. 24, and they have many matches yet to come, including away matches against Pipestone Area on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Maple River on Thursday, Aug. 31.
