USC loses to Fairmont 4-3 in girls tennis
The United South Central Rebels put up a good fight against the Fairmont Cardinals at a tennis meet held on Monday, Aug. 28. However, it was the Cardinals who snagged a narrow, 4-3 victory by the end of the evening.
Brylee Neubauer suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Fairmont’s Hope Klanderud at No. 1 singles. USC’s Lauren Hansen was also defeated at No. 2 singles by Cardinal Abigail Peyman, 6-3, 6-3.
The Rebels bounced back at No. 3 singles with Maya Hansen’s 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Fairmont’s Elly Stegge.
USC booked another win at No. 4 singles by a narrow margin. Olivia Bungum lost her first set against Fairmont’s Madisyn Peyman, 7-6 (7), but won the second set – which was just as close – 7-6 (7). Bungum took the tiebreaking set 1-0 (10) to bring USC its second singles win of the evening.
Cardinals Emelia Klanderud and Brynn Gustafson won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-1, 6-1, over Rebels Ivy O’Rourke and Caitlin Rheingans.
However, USC was the victor at No. 2 doubles. Rebels Julianna Clore and Eva Hernandez defeated Ellie Plumhoff and Jaydan Moses, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The match came down to No. 3 doubles, which brought a final win for Fairmont. Cardinals Claire Brockman and Carly Gustafson defeated Claire Schimek and Kylee Koziolek in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
