The United South Central football team struggled a bit in their first game of the season when they took on the Mayer Lutheran Crusaders on Friday, Sept. 1.

The Rebels came back home with a 28-6 loss.

The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter. USC scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Mayer Lutheran scored a touchdown and extra point in the second and third quarters, and two TDs and PATs in the fourth quarter.

Both teams had nearly the same total yards in the game. USC had 262 yards of total offense, while Mayer Lutheran had 260 yards.

The Rebels had 39 rushing attempts and gained 232 yards on the ground and scored one touchdown.

The Crusaders had 130 yards rushing on 25 attempts, two touchdowns and one fumble.

USC quarterback Jon Martinez was 2 for 7 passing for 30 yards and one interception. Mayer Lutheran was 7 of 15 for 130 yards and one touchdown and one interception.

Dylan Bohnsack led the way rushing with 91 yards on seven attempts and scored the Rebels’ lone TD.

Byron Getchell gained 65 yards on 10 attempts, Martinez had 51 yards on 12 attempts, Gavin Bird 12 yards on eight totes, Isaiah Gonzalez carried the ball twice for seven yards and Kolt Bullerman had four yards on one run.

Blake Bullerman led the team on defense with seven tackles. Gavin Gruntzke had six and Martinez had five and made the one interception.

Hayden Chandler and Jake Cassens each added four tackles, Bullerman and Gonzalez three each and Angel Dejesus and Nathan Mutschler two apiece. Brayden Mithun had a fumble recovery.
