Pipestone Area squeaks by BEA 21-18
Each team scores three touchdowns, but Bucs miss extra points
In a game decided by extra points, the Pipestone Area Arrows defeated the visiting Blue Earth Area Buccaneers 21-18 on Friday, Sept 1.
Pipestone Area converted one two-point extra-point attempt and kicked one extra point to provide the margin of victory over BEA, who failed to convert on any of their extra-point attempts.
The Arrows never trailed in the game. They scored the only touchdown of the first half on a short run by Hayden Brooke. The extra point kick was good and the first half ended with Pipestone leading 7-0.
BEA scored their initial touchdown of the season with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter when senior running back Caleb Langager carried the ball across the goal line from four yards out to cut Pipestone Area’s lead to 7-6.
Later in the third quarter the Arrow’s quarterback, Landon Quist, scored on a four-yard run with 3:06 on the clock. The extra point attempt failed but Pipestone Area had increased their lead to 13-6.
An interception by the Arrows set up another scoring opportunity before the end of the third quarter. Pipestone Area made the most of their chance and scored with 2:03 left in the third quarter and then completed a pass for a successful two-point conversion and a 21-6 lead over BEA.
The Bucs pulled closer with 11:18 remaining in the game when Langager found daylight for a 44-yard touchdown run. The extra point failed so BEA trailed 21-12.
BEA inched closer when Langager scored his third touchdown of the night with four minutes left to play. His run of 24 yards cut Pipestone Area’s lead to 21-18. Unfortunately, the Bucs failed to convert the extra point and the Arrows held on for a 21-18 triumph.
BEA hosted Triton on Friday, Sept. 8, at Wilson Field.
Look for the results of that contest in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
