Rebel tennis team suffers a narrow defeat to Sibley East

It was a near miss for the United South Central girls tennis team when they faced the Sibley East-Arlington Wolverines on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Rebels suffered a 4-3 loss to their clawed foes.

Brylee Neubauer took on Sibley East-Arlington’s Morgan Johnson at No. 1 singles and emerged the victor, 6-1, 6-4. Wolverine Morgan Haggenmiller booked a 6-1, 6-3 win over Maya Hansen at No. 2 singles, however.

Sibley East-Arlington’s Jada Henke defeated USC’s Olivia Bungum at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-5, while Macey Thoele defeated Rebel Eva Hernandez at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

The Rebels fared better at doubles. No. 1 doubles players Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win over Wolverines Jadyn Krueger and Morgan Bednarek. USC’s Ivy O’Rourke and Julianna Clore also won their match against No. 2 doubles players Hannah Bartlette and Ady Beneke, 6-3, 6-4.

Sibley East-Arlington’s Tessa McCracken and Taylor Moos played Caitlin Rheingans and Claire Schimek at No. 3 doubles and emerged the victors, 6-4, 6-2.

The Rebels were slated to play Tri-City United on Thursday, Sept. 7. They are also scheduled to host a triangular meet on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Maple River 6, USC 1

The Maple River Eagles snatched a 6-1 win over the Rebels at a meet held on Thursday, Aug. 31.

USC’s Brylee Neubauer was up against Maple River’s Ally Mersman at No. 1 singles. Mersman prevailed, 6-1, 6-2, over Neubauer. The No. 2 singles match also went to the Eagles – Macy Sohre defeated Rebel Ivy O’Rourke, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 3 singles brought a third victory for Maple River when Tabitha Barkosky tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win over Caitlin Rheingans. USC’s Claire Schimek was also defeated at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2, by Norah Davis.

The Rebels booked a victory at No. 1 doubles. Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun took the court against Eagles Kelsey Jaeger and Ellie Braaten and won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Maple River had the final say at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, although both matches were hard-fought.

No. 2 doubles players Maya Hansen and Olivia Bungum narrowly lost their first set against Maple River’s Madison Ward and Brooke Reuter, 7-6 (3), but USC won the second set, 7-5. The Eagles took the win in the third set, 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, Maple River’s Claire Langworthy and Kate Davis started off the match with a first-set win, 6-4, but they lost the second set to Rebels Eva Hernandez and Julianna Clore, 6-4. The third set went to the Eagles, 6-4.
