USC tennis team goes 4-1 in last week

Triumphs over Tri-City United, Austin, Worthington and Albert Lea

The United South Central girls tennis team was on a roll last week, winning consecutive matches against Tri-City United/Cleveland, Austin, Worthington, and Albert Lea.

Unfortunately, the streak ended on Tuesday, Sept. 12, when the Rebels were defeated by the Maple River Eagles, 6-1.

Maple River’s Ally Mersmen started off a string of straight-set wins for the Eagles with her 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Brylee Neubauer at No. 1 singles. Macy Sohre also beat USC’s Olivia Bungum at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Rebel Maya Hansen suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Tabitha Barkosky at No. 3 singles, but Eva Hernandez tallied a win for the Rebels at No. 4 singles. She defeated Maple River’s Kate Davis, 6-1, 6-3.

No. 1 doubles brought USC’s Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun face-to-face with Kelsey Jaeger and Madison Ward. The match went to the Eagles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Maple River booked another win at No. 2 doubles when Brooke Reuter and Claire Langworthy defeated Ivy O’Rourke and Julianna Clore, 6-3, 7-5. The No. 3 doubles match went to Norah Davis and Kennidi Oliver with their 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Claire Schimek and Elise Hansen.

The Rebels will return to the tennis courts on Saturday, Sept. 16, in a match against Faribault. They will face Tri-City United-Montgomery on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

USC 6, Albert Lea 1

When the Albert Lea Tigers hosted the Rebels for a meet on Monday, Sept. 11, USC took home a 6-1 victory.

Brylee Neubauer was up against Albert Lea’s Rachel Doppelhammer at No. 1 singles. After Neubauer won a close first set, 7-6 (4), she took the second set, 6-3, to book USC’s first win.

Rebel Olivia Bungum also tallied a win against Bree Weilage at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Maya Hansen kept the trend going at No. 3 singles with her 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Ava Bremer.

Eva Hernandez sealed the deal at the No. 4 slot when she earned USC’s fourth singles win against Gaby Tufte, 6-3, 6-4.

It was Addison Mithun and Lauren Hansen up against Tigers Lilly Hyke and Kallie Studier at No. 1 doubles, and the Rebels did not disappoint with a 6-4, 6-0 win. USC’s Julianna Clore and Ivy O’Rourke also defeated Emma Prihoda and Emery Nelson at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-3.

Albert Lea saw its sole victory at No. 3 doubles. Jaylee Waters and Brooke Tufte defeated Claire Schimek and Brooklyn Miller in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

USC Triangular Meet

USC 7, Worthington 0

USC swept the Worthington Trojans, 7-0, on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Brylee Neubauer started the Rebels off with a win at No. 1 singles when she defeated Hannah McNab, 6-4, 6-1. Olivia Bungum also secured a victory over Trojan Chloe Martinez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

Maya Hansen played for USC at No. 3 singles against Worthington’s Sadie Nickel. and the Rebel booked an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over her opponent. USC’s Eva Hernandez also defeated Taylor Michelson at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-1.

USC’s Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun were up against Worthington’s Eleanor Teerink and Angie Dailey at No. 1 doubles, and they won the match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Ivy O’Rourke and Julianna Clore booked another 6-0, 6-0 win over Trojans Makayla Phouangphet and Ali Fellows at No. 2 doubles.

It was a final victory for the Rebels at No. 3 doubles. The win went to Kylee Koziolek and Claire Schimek in straight sets, with their 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Tiana Garcia and Cassie Schulz.

USC 5, Austin 2

The Rebels sent Austin packing on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they defeated the Packers 5-2.

The No. 1 singles match went to Austin when Gracie Schmitt beat USC’s Brylee Neubauer, 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 singles was a victory for the Rebels, however. Olivia Bungum defeated Packer Ella Nack in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

In No. 3 singles action, Rebel Maya Hansen booked a 6-3, 6-2 win over Yazmine Huerta, and Eva Hernandez tallied another win at No. 4 singles with her 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Austin’s Sophia Meyer.

Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun paired up at No. 1 doubles against Packers Abby VanPelt and Katie VanPelt. The first set went to the Rebels, 6-4, but the Packers fought back to take the second set, 6-1. A marathon third set eventually went to Hansen and Mithun, 10-5.

No. 2 doubles was another contentious match. USC’s Ivy O’Rourke and Julianna Clore defeated Seanna Kubas and Jenna Hetzel, 6-2, in the first set, but they lost the second set to Austin, 6-3. USC took the third set, and the win, 10-6.

Packers Payton Nelson and Claudia Slinden were up against Kylie Koziolek and Claire Schimek at No. 3 doubles. The match went to Austin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

USC 6, Tri-City United/Cleveland 1

The USC Rebels bested the Tri-City United/Cleveland Titans, 6-1, at a match held on Thursday, Sept. 7.

USC’s Brylee Neubauer was the victor at No. 1 singles when she defeated Tri-City United/Cleveland’s Ellie Adams, 6-4, 6-3. Maya Hansen also swept Titan Reagan Steffen at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Olivia Bungum continued USC’s winning streak with her 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Destynee Wolff at No. 3 singles, and Rebel Eva Hernandez took the No. 4 singles win over Cristina Cruz, 6-2, 6-2.

In No. 1 doubles action, it was USC’s Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun up against Tri City United/Cleveland’s Anne Cooper and Ava Flintrop. The first set was a narrow victory for the Rebels, 7-6 (2), and they won the second set, 6-4, to secure the match for USC.

Rebels Juliana Clore and Ivy O’Rourke teamed up against Titans Becca Sladek and Alice Schroeder at No. 2 doubles. The close match started off with a 7-5 win for USC in the first set, but the Titans took the second set, 6-4. The match was decided with the Rebels’ 6-3 win in the third set.

Tri-City United/Cleveland tallied its sole victory at No. 3 doubles. Lily Martin and Addison Houn got off to a shaky start when USC’s Claire Schimek and Kylee Koziolek defeated them, 7-6 (5), in the first set. However, the Titans took the second and third sets, 6-4 and 6-0, to secure the win.
