BEA wins 5-2 over USC in tennis
Team is preparing for Section Playoffs, which begin on Oct. 2

When two Faribault County tennis teams faced off on Wednesday, Sept. 27, it was the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers who took home the win, 5-2, over the United South Central Rebels.
BEA’s Addison Armstrong started off the match with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Brylee Neubauer at No. 1 singles. Olivia Dutton booked another win for the Bucs when she defeated Eva Hernandez at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Grace Hanson and Abbey Lorenz completed BEA’s sweep at singles. Hanson trounced Rebel Claire Schimek at the No. 3 slot, 6-0, 6-0, and Lorenz tallied another straight-set victory against USC’s Caitlin Rheingans at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
USC secured both of its wins at doubles, starting at the No. 1 slot, when Lauren Hansen and Addison Mithun met BEA’s Lauren Survis and Carol Schrader on the No. 1 doubles court. Although the Rebels lost the first set, 6-2, they won the second set, 6-3, and the tiebreaking third set, 1-0 (6).
Maya Hansen and Olivia Bungum teamed up against Bucs McKinley Hanson and Grace Schavey at No. 2 doubles. The match went to USC in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 3 doubles was a BEA victory, however. Addison and Erin Prescher defeated Rebels Julianna Clore and Ivy O’Rourke in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
The Bucs played Worthington on Thursday, Sept. 28.
They are scheduled to compete against the high seed in the Girls Varsity Section Quarterfinals on Monday, Oct. 2, and the winner of that match will advance to the Section Team Semifinals and Finals on Thursday, Oct. 5.
The Girls Varsity Tennis State Tournament will take place at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Fairmont 4, BEA 3
BEA lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Fairmont Cardinals on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
No. 1 singles started off with a close first set between Addison Armstrong and Cardinal Hope Klanderud, but Armstrong ended up taking the set, 7-5. Armstrong’s 6-1 victory in the second set secured the match for BEA.
Olivia Dutton also brought a win for the Bucs at No. 2 singles with her 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Brynn Gustafson. However, Fairmont’s Emelia Klanderud was the victor at No. 3 singles when she defeated Grace Hanson 6-1, 6-2.
Elly Stegge won her No. 4 singles match as well, but her opponent, Buc Abbey Lorenz, put up a fight. After Stegge won the first set, 6-3, Lorenz took the second set, 6-1. The third set went to Stegge, 6-2.
In doubles action, Ellie Plumhoff and Abigail Peyman played in the No. 1 slot for Fairmont, where they defeated Bucs Lauren Survis and Carol Schrader, 6-3, 6-1.
It was Cardinals Madisyn Peyman and Claire Brockman up against McKinley Hanson and Grace Schavey at No. 2 doubles. The match produced a win for Fairmont, 6-3, 6-2.
The final doubles match went to BEA when No. 3 players Addison Prescher and Erin Prescher defeated Fairmont’s Jaydan Moses and Carly Gustafson, 6-1, 6-4.
BEA 5, New Ulm 2
The Bucs captured a 5-2 win from the New Ulm Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 21.
BEA’s Addison Armstrong faced a tough opponent at No. 1 singles. She was defeated in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, by New Ulm’s Karlee Prahl.
Bucs Olivia Dutton and Grace Hanson turned the tables at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Dutton defeated Eagle Lydia King, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, while Hanson defeated Joci Pettersen, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 singles slot.
No. 4 singles went to New Ulm when Carmen Schotzko snagged a 6-3, 7-5 victory from BEA’s Lauren Survis.
Carol Schrader and Ashlyn Klinkner faced New Ulm’s Peyton Kveno and Lana Braun at No. 1 doubles, where they booked a 6-0, 6-1 win for BEA. Addison and Erin Prescher tallied another win for the Bucs at No. 2 doubles against Lexi Schneider and Aubrey Demarais, 6-1, 6-0.
Grace Schavey and Abbey Lorenz earned a final win for BEA at No. 3 doubles with their 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Eagles Hannah Davey and Morgan Hauenstein.
