The United South Central Rebels broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter of their football game against the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers to take an 8-0 lead.

It turned out to be all of the points the Rebels would need as their defense shut out the Buccaneers on their way to a 28-0 victory in a game played at Waterville on Sept. 29.

The host Buccaneers came into the game with only one win in four games and the Rebels were determined to keep WEM with just one win. Meanwhile, with the victory, USC improved their season record to 3-2. All three of the wins by the Rebels have been by shutouts.

USC added to their point total with one more touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the fourth quarter.

Jon Martinez scored two touchdowns while rushing for 57 yards on 10 carries.

Byron Getchel had 14 totes for 31 yards and one touchdown. Blake Bullerman recorded the other USC touchdown while rushing for 42 yards on 12 carries.

Also contributing to USC’s total of 182 rushing yards were Dillon Bonsack with 16 yards on four carries, Gavin Grunzke with 13 yards on four rushes and Seth Kayser, who gained nine yards on two attempts.

Angel DeJesus rushed for a two-point conversion and Caleb Whiteside was 2-for-2 on extra-point kicks.

Martinez attempted six passes and completed four. Blake Bullerman had two catches for 67 yards, Kolt Bullerman had one catch for 25 yards and Nathan Mutschler finished with one reception for 12 yards.

Many players contributed to USC’s shutout performance against the Buccaneers.

The Rebel defense picked off four WEM passes. Two of the interceptions were by Martinez while DeJesus and Kayser each had one.

The leading tackler for USC was Isaiah Gonzalez who had seven total tackles. Blake Bullerman finished with six tackles while Martinez added five.

Getchel recorded four tackles followed by Jake Cassens and Mutschler who each had three.

Grunzke forced a fumble and Avery Crawford had a fumble recovery for the Rebels.

USC played host to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton for their Homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 6. The Bulldogs came into the game with a 2-3 record.
