WEM volleyball team sweeps USC
Harpestad leads Rebels with nine kills, 17 digs and an ace block
USC's Kiera Schultz goes for a kill when the Rebels played Alden-Conger earlier this season.
The United South Central Rebels were swept by the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers in three straight games at Wells on Sept. 28.
The Buccaneers won the first game 25-18, took the second game 25-19 and polished off the Rebels with another 25-19 triumph in the third game.
“We battled with WEM all night,” USC coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “But, we struggled to muster the energy and enthusiasm necessary to allow us to get a lead against them.”
One positive item for the Rebels was the play of Kendal Harpestad who led the team with nine kills and 17 digs while also recording an ace block.
“Kendal was a bright spot and she really competed well,” Kuechenmeister added. “Her 17 digs were evidence of her commitment to defense and that made a big difference for us in each set.”
Kiera Schultz finished the evening with four kills, nine digs and five blocks. Madison Passer and Elizabeth Meyer each contributed three kills with Passer also tallying seven digs.
Eleny Korn led the offense with 17 set assists while also contributing to the team’s defensive efforts with eight digs.
Chloe Lutteke had 11 digs on the night while Karly Koehler and Maddie Dallman each had four.
“WEM served tough and kept our serve receive off balance at times,” Kuechenmeister commented. “They also blocked well, so we need to adjust a little bit better from the hitting standpoint and attack what they are giving us.”
Despite the loss, the USC coach was still proud of his team.
“We didn’t roll over,” Kuechenmeister said. “I appreciated that the kids hung in there throughout and didn’t throw in the towel.”
