The United South Central girls basketball team got their 2023-2024 season off on the right foot with a thrilling 50-48 victory over the Cardinals of Leroy-Ostrander on Thursday, Nov. 30, at home.

The USC Rebels were behind by one point at halftime, 27-26, but they outscored L-O 24-21 in the second stanza to take the two-point victory.

Leading the charge for the Rebels was Taylor Schroeder who netted 28 points. Olivia Bungum scored 13 points for the Rebels, Ivy O’Rourke added seven and Maddie Dallman two for the team.

Overall, USC was 19 of 61 for shooting from the floor, making 15 of 40 from 2-point range and 4 of 21 from 3-point range. L-O was 17 of 69 overall, with 12 of 50 2-pointers and 6 of 19 for threes.

The Rebels were 8 of 21 from the free-throw line while the Cardinals were 9 of 21.

The Rebels outrebounded the Cards 23 to 4. USC also had three blocks to their none, 15 steals to their four, 20 turnovers to their 17 and 23 fouls to their 24.

The Rebels were all set for their second game, which was the following night, on Friday, Dec. 1, against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

This week they play on Thursday, Dec. 14, at Nicollet and on Friday, Dec. 15 they will host Triton.

JWP 67, USC 38

The United South Central girls basketball team had a difficult time against the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs on Friday, Dec. 1.

The Rebels fell by a score of 67-38.

“Unforced turnovers really shot us in the foot,” coach Taylor Ovrebo said. “We got beat up rebounding, losing that battle by 22.”

USC held JWP to 12 points within the half court, but offensive putbacks and transition baskets by the Bulldogs really hurt the Rebels.

Leading scorer for USC was Taylor Schroeder with 24 points, followed by Olivia Bungum with 12. Maddie Dallman had two points and eight rebounds.
