The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys improved their record to 2-1 when they defeated the Martin County West Mavericks 84-69 in basketball on Friday, Dec. 8.

The visiting Mavericks scored the first two points of the game before Cole Barker grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball through the hoop for two points.

A steal and layup by Jacob Grandgenett, a three-pointer by Branson Hauskins and a baseline reverse layup by Grandgenett quickly had the Maroon and Gold on top 9-2.

MCW scored five straight points to close the gap to two points but a jumper in the lane by BEA’s Will Bromeland kept the Bucs in the lead.

BEA had extended their lead to 19-12 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half when Barker connected on a shot from behind the arc to ignite a nine-point run. The run ended with Hauskins’ dunk that brought the Buc faithful out of their seats and made the score 28-12 in favor of BEA.

The final points of the first half came on a steal and layup by Barker and sent the teams into the locker rooms for the intermission with BEA holding a 43-28 lead.

Each team scored 41 points in the final half to make the final score 84-69.

Four BEA players reached double figures in scoring led by Bromeland with 27 points. Hauskins finished the game with 19 points while Barker and Grandgenett each scored 13. Max Loge just missed reaching double figures with nine points.

As a team the Bucs were 17-for-28 on shot attempts from inside of the arc and 14-for-36 on their shots from inside of the arc.

The Mavericks attempted 28 two-point shots and made 18 while converting on five of their 10 three-point attempts.

BEA went 8-for-12 at the free throw line. Meanwhile, MCW had 38 free-throw attempts and made 23.

Loge led the Bucs with five assists. Hauskins and Barker each had three.

BEA had a 26-22 rebounding advantage and were led by Bromeland with seven rebounds and Loge who finished with six.

Barker and Grandgenett each had four steals in the game and the Bucs finished with a total of 12 thefts. The Mavericks had four steals.

BEA traveled to Fairmont on Friday, Dec. 15, to take on the Cardinals. They will return home on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to host the Windom Eagles. The team plays at St. James on Thursday, Dec. 21.
