A heartbreaker.

The United South Central Rebels girls basketball team lost a close one when they faced off against the Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals on Friday, Dec. 8.

“We missed a layup to go up by one point with 49 seconds left and they came down and hit an uncontested 3-pointer to essentially win the game,” Rebels head coach Taylor Ovrebo said.

The final score was Faribault BA 56 and USC 50. The loss dropped the Rebels to a 1-2 record.

“Our defensive effort wasn’t where we needed to be,” the coach added. “Too many uncontested shots on slow rotations and again, too many offensive rebounds given up.”

The Rebels’ mentor did add that the team rebounded better than they have, so he was happy to see the improvement. However, ball movement and spacing still has to get better, as the team has too many unforced turnovers.

Olivia Bungum had a really big night to lead the Rebels. She had 30 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Taylor Schroeder added 15 points, Ivy O’Rourke had three and Chloe Bullerman added two.

The Rebels were next set to travel to Nicollet on Thursday, Dec. 14 and then host Triton the next day on Friday, Dec. 15.

This week they will face off against Blue Earth Area on Thursday, Dec. 21 and against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday, Dec. 22.
