Longhorns sweep triangular meet
Team takes second place at Darrell Jaeger Invitational Tourney
Maple River/United South Central’s Kolt Bullerman works for a reversal in a match during a triangular meet held at United South Central on Thursday, Jan 18. Bullerman would go on to defeat his opponent. Results of the triangular meet will be in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns went 2-0 when they wrestled in the Mankato West Triangular on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
MR/USC 54, Waseca 15
The Longhorns won the first seven matches on their way to a 54-15 triumph over the Waseca Bluejays.
Noah Gonzalez received a forfeit at 107 pounds before Bebo Getchell won by a pin over Archer O’Brien at 114.
Jace Ignaszewski earned a 5-2 decision over Jacob Knutson at 121 and Isaiah Gonzalez received a forfeit in the 127-pound match.
The Longhorns’ Brayden Mithun squared off against Oliver Staloch at 133 pounds with Mithun winning by a fall. Braxton Simon added six more team points to MR/USC’s score when he pinned Peyton Sommers at 139 pounds.
Wyatt Walters kept the momentum going when he put Sam Selthun’s shoulders to the mat in the 145-pound match which put the Longhorns on top 39-0.
Waseca won by a decision in the 152-pound match before MR/USC’s Kolt Bullerman reclaimed the momentum for the Longhorns with a pin over Kellen Klinger at 160 pounds.
Byron Getchell’s win by a pin over Landan Madsen in the 172-pound match increased the Longhorns’ advantage to 51-3 and Max Fuller’s 6-4 decision over Ton Bethke of Waseca gave MR/USC their final three points of the evening.
The Bluejays added 12 points to their team score when they won by a fall at 215 pounds and by a forfeit at 285 pounds.
MR/USC 47,
Mankato West 18
The Longhorns had another solid outing when they defeated the Mankato West Scarlets 47-18.
MR/USC once again got off to a fast start by winning the first seven matches of the event.
Noah Gonzalez won by a 16-1 technical fall at 107 pounds to give the Longhorns their first five points. A pin by Bebo Getchell over Westin Ruch at 114 pounds increased MR/USC’s lead to 11-0.
Jace Ignaszewski won by an 11-9 decision over Ian Risto in the 121-pound match and Isaiah Gonzalez earned three more team points with an 8-2 decision over Robert Wicks at 127 pounds.
Leading 17-0, the Longhorns recorded three straight falls to go on top 35-0. Brayden Mithun pinned Soren Ehmke at 133 pounds, Braxton Simon pinned Vincent Weimer at 139 and Wyatt Walters put Asher Valimont’s shoulders to the mat in the 145-pound match.
Mankato West earned their first three points of the night when they won the 152-pound match by a decision. The Scarlets added nine more points to their total with a victory by a fall at 160 pounds and by a decision at 172 pounds.
The Longhorns’ Max Fuller pinned James Engelen of the Scarlets to extend MR/USC’s lead to 41-12. A pin by Dizel Butler of MR/USC over Rylan Fischer in the 215-pound match made the score 47-12 in favor of the Longhorns.
Damien Richards of Mankato West won by a forfeit at 285 pounds to make the final score 47-18 with MR/USC coming out on top.
Darrell Jaeger Invite
The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns wrestling team used four first place finishes on their way to second place at the Stewartville ‘Darrell Jaeger Varsity Invitational Tournament’.
Host team Stewartville took first place with 228 points, while MR/USC was second with 195.5.
In third was Rochester Mayo with 192.5, fourth was Cannon Falls at 155, fifth was GMLOKS at 129, sixth was Byron with 80.5, Triton was seventh with 70, NRHEG was eighth at 56.5, Trinity was ninth with 51 and Rochester John Marshal was 10th at 38.
The Longhorns’ Noah Gonzalez was first at 107 pounds by an 11-0 major decision over Owen Parish of Cannon Falls.
Isaiah Gonzalez placed first at 127 pounds with a 7-2 decision over Reid Rinn of Stewartville in the championshop match.
Also placing first, at 139 pounds, was Braxton Simon of the Longhorns, he defeated Jace Deyoung of Stewartville by a 6-4 decision.
Wyatt Walters was the fourth Longhorn to claim first place. He defeated Dalton Pischke of GMLOKS by a fall in the 145 pound championship match.
Byron Getchell placed second at 172 pounds, falling 6-1 to Tanner Elzen of Stewartville in the championship match.
MR/USC’s Brayden Mithun placed third at 133 pounds, Jace Ignaszewski placed fourth at 121 pounds, Dizel Butler was fourth at 215 pounds, Garrett Bollmann was fifth at 152 pounds, and Bebo Getchell was sixth at 114 pounds.
MR/USC 32, Faribault 27
It was a close match when the Maple River/United South Central Longhorns took on Faribault at the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Triangular on Thursday, Jan. 11.
The Longhorns were one point down going into the final match and ended up winning 32-27.
MR/USC started off behind 6-0 when Noah Gonzalez lost a close 3-2 decision at 107 pounds to Lain Kuhlman and Bebo Getchell fell 4-2 to Chase Vargo at 114.
The score got tied 6-6 when Jace Ignaszewski pinned Aiden Conrad at 121 pounds. The Longhorns went up 9-6 when Isaiah Gonzalez won 3-1 over Lucas Nelson.
Faribault went ahead 12-9 when Brayden Mithun lost by a fall to JT Hausen at 133. Braxton Simon put the Longhorns ahead 15-12 with a pin of Andrew Flicek at 139. Then it was tied at 15-15 when Wyatt Walters lost 4-1 to Isaac Yetzer at 145.
The Longhorns would win the next three matches for a 26-15 lead. Garrett Bollman won 7-3 over Cameron Ford at 152, Kolt Bullerman won a 12-4 major decision over Jayden Hart at 160 and Byron Getchell won a 9-0 major decision at 172.
But at 189 pounds Max Fuller lost by a fall to Justin Sanoja and at 215 the Longhorns gave up a forfeit and Fairbault went ahead by one, 27-26 with one match remaining.
Dizel Butler won by a fall at 285 pounds over Xavier Padilla and the Longhorns won 32-27.
LCWM 52, MR/USC 13
It was a different story when the Longhorns took on the host Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights. LCWM took the match 52-13 over MR/USC.
The Longhorns won three matches.
At 127 pounds, Isaiah Gonzalez won by a very close 3-2 decision over Griffin Gimenez of LCWM.
Braxton Simon won by a fall over Zach Palmer at 145 pounds.
And, at 172 pounds, Byron Getchell scored a 14-1 major decision over Nathan Sickler.
