The New Ulm Eagles boys basketball team improved their Big South Conference standing to 9-2 and their overall record to 15-5 when they defeated the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers 94-46 on Friday, Feb. 9.

BEA, playing on their home floor, actually got off to a good start in the contest. The Eagles got on the board first but the Bucs’ Gage Barker laid one in to tie the game at 2-2 and Sully Dahlberg sank a baseline 3-pointer to put the Bucs on top 5-2.

Dahlberg made it 7-2 in BEA’s favor when he drove the lane for another basket.

After the Eagles had tied the score at 7-7, Dahlberg drove the lane and faked a shot to get the defenders in the air before putting the ball through the hoop for a 9-7 BEA lead.

The Bucs’ Taylor Davids blocked a New Ulm shot attempt and then swished a pull-up jumper inside the lane to extend BEA’s lead to 11-7 with 14:04 to play in the first half.

It would be three minutes before the Bucs would score again with two Max Loge free throws. Unfortunately, by that time, the Eagles had put 19 points up on the board.

Another three minute scoring drought by BEA led to New Ulm having 28 points before Dahlberg’s two free throws gave the Bucs 15.

The Eagles continued to extend their lead and by halftime they were up 59-26 over the Bucs.

The second half saw New Ulm outscore BEA 35-20 to complete their 94-46 triumph.

BEA made 15 of their 27 attempts (56 percent) from inside the arc. However, they were only 4-for-18 (22 percent) from outside the arc. They made four of their five (80 percent) free throws.

New Ulm blistered the nets on 24 for 37 (65 percent) shooting from inside the arc. They also made 12 of their 24 (50 percent) 3-point attempts. They made 13 trips to the charity stripe and made 10 of their shots (77 percent).

The Eagles had a 39-14 advantage in rebounds and scored 46 of their points in the paint.

BEA committed 16 turnovers to nine for New Ulm.

Dahlberg led the Bucs in scoring with 13 points followed by Barker with 11. Davids finished with seven points.

Barker was also the leading rebounder for BEA with six followed by Davids with four.

Loge led the Bucs in steals with three while Barker was the team leader in assists with four.

BEA traveled to Mapleton to battle the Maple River Eagles on Thursday, Feb. 15. They will travel to Medford to take on the Tigers on Monday, Feb. 19.
