Both area girls basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end when they lost in the first round of the Sub-Section Tournaments.

Maple River 68, BEA 35

The No. 1-seeded Maple River Eagles took control early in their game against the No. 8-seeded Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in the opening round of the Section 2AA South Sub-section girls basketball playoffs on Monday night, Feb. 26, in Mapleton. The Eagles, behind 25 points from senior guard Lexi Thomas, defeated the Bucs 68-35.

Thomas had the hot hand to start the game and scored 10 of her team’s first 12 points while Maple River opened up a 12-2 lead five minutes into the contest.

The Eagles led 36-16 at intermission and then outscored the Bucs 34-19 in the second half to claim the win and advance to the quarterfinal round against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

BEA made 10 of their 28 (36 percent) shots from 2-point range and only two of their 18 (11 percent) 3-point attempts. The Bucs attempted 13 free throws and made nine (69 percent).

Maple River was 15-for-24 (63 percent) on their shots from inside the arc. They made 11 of their 29 (38 percent) shots from outside the arc. The Eagles made 14 trips to the charity stripe but made only five of their shots (36 percent).

The Eagles had a 40-26 advantage in rebounding which helped them to a 22-4 advantage in transition points.

BEA committed 21 turnovers to 16 for Maple River.

Lola Lundquist was the leading scorer for the Bucs with 18 points. She also led BEA with six rebounds and two assists.

Carol Schrader tallied four points for the Maroon and Gold, Erika Gaydon, Jessica Moore and Ashlyn Klinkner each had three and Madelyn Ferguson finished with two.

Due to illness, starting senior guard Kate Armon was unable to play. Other BEA seniors seeing their final action on the basketball floor were Berkley Hagedorn, Leah Becker, Klinkner and Taylor Klabunde.

The Bucs’ overall record for the season was 3-23.

Thomas finished with 25 points for the Eagles followed by Claire McGregor with 13, Krystal Ulrich with nine, Bria Cole with seven, Ella Schull with four, Madison Ward with three, Ally Mersman, Alli Boening and Claire Caven with two each and Kelsey Jaeger with one.

MCW 58, USC 33

The United South Central girls basketball team’s season came to an end on Monday night, Feb. 26.

The Rebel girls lost to the Martin County West Mavericks, 58-33, in the quarterfinals of the Section 2A Sub-Section tourney. The game was played in Sherburn.

The Rebels took an early 8-2 lead against the Mavericks on three straight baskets by guard Olivia Bungum, but they could not contend with the Mavericks the rest of the way.

The score at the half was 21-12 in favor of the Mavericks. MCW outscored USC 31-21 in the second half.

MCW was seeded at No. 2 in the Sub-Section, while USC was the No. 7 seed. The Mavericks went on to play No. 3 seed Springfield.

Taylor Schroeder led the team with 13 points, making 5 of 15 shots from the field and going 3 for 3 from the free throw line. She also had two blocks and four steals for the Rebels.

Bungum ended up with 12 points, making six shots out of 18 from the floor. She also had four rebounds and five steals.

Maddie Dallman had six points and Ivy O’Rourke had two.
