Bucs pick up first win in baseball

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers’ baseball team came into their game against the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers on Saturday, April 13 with a record of zero wins and three losses. Two of their three losses had occurred in the final inning of the game.
In this game, BEA turned the tables against WEM by rallying for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a four-run deficit and earn their first win of the season 9-8. The game was played at Veterans Field in Blue Earth.
With their backs up against the wall heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, an error by WEM on a ground ball by Taylor Davids gave BEA new life. Following the error, Peyton O’Hara and Noah Dahl each singled to load the bases.
A single by Kaden Ackerman scored Davids with BEA’s fifth run of the game. The next batter, Branson Hauskins, was hit by a pitch to plate O’Hara and cut WEM’s lead to 8-6. The next two Maroon and Gold batters, Jacob Grandgenett and Braydon Rhey, were also hit by pitches to force in Dahl and Ackerman and tie the game at 8-8.
After a pop out to the second baseman for the first out of the inning, Matthew Klabunde stepped to the plate and was walked on four consecutive pitches to bring home Hauskins with the winning run.
With the win, BEA improved their overall record to 1-3 while WEM has yet to win a game this season.
WEM had a 4-0 lead through the first four and a half innings before BEA finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rhey started off the bottom of the fifth inning by hitting a line drive single to right field. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Caleb Langager reached first when the WEM second baseman could not handle Langager’s pop fly. Rhey held up at third base. Langager advanced to second base on defensive indifference.
Following a strikeout, Davids hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Rhey and allow Langager to move up to third base. A single by O’Hara drove in Langager and cut WEM’s lead to 4-2.
WEM added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go on top 8-2.
BEA cut the lead to 8-4 when they scored twice in the bottom of the sixth.
Ackerman hit a lead-off double and went to third on a one-out single by Grandgenett. The WEM shortstop misplayed a ball hit by Rhey which allowed Ackerman to score and Grandgenett to make it to third base. A sacrifice fly by Langager scored Grandgenett with BEA’s fourth run of the game.
Ackerman pitched one inning of relief to pick up the win. He faced three batters in the top of the seventh inning and got two of them to fly out and the other one to strike out.
Langager started on the mound for the home team and threw four innings, giving up four runs, none earned. He allowed two hits, walked three batters and struck out five.
Hauskins pitched the fifth and sixth innings. He was charged with four earned runs while yielding two hits, walking three batters and striking out three.
BEA outhit WEM 12-4 but committed four costly errors to only two for the visitors.
O’Hara collected three hits in four plate appearances, while Langager, Ackerman and Carter Rosenau each had two hits.
