United South Central libero, Karly Koehler, receives a serve during volleyball action in Wells last week. The Rebels defeated Maple River and hosted an invitational tournament last week.

After the match was tied 1-1, the United South Central volleyball team powered their way to a 3-1 win over the Maple River Eagles on Monday, Sept. 23, at home.

The scores of the sets were 25-19, 24-26, 30-28, 25-12.

“The girls found a way to get another ‘W’ tonight in dramatic fashion,” coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “Fun to be able to win our Homecoming match!”

Madison Passer led the way with 14 kills, 14 digs and one block. Right behind her was Chloe Bullerman with 13 kills, three digs, seven blocks, one assist and one block. Alivia Bruegger added four kills, 16 digs, one block, one assist and three aces.

The coach noted that the match itself had kind of a goofy feel in the first three sets.

“We’d have stretches of great play, followed by some stretches of mental mistakes and unforced errors, and we couldn’t get much separation from the Eagles,” he explained. “I credit Maple River for playing scrappy. That said, I’m proud of the fight from the kids.”

Karly Koehler had 35 digs, two aces and one assist, Presley Brandenburg had seven digs and two aces and Jaelyn Stangler added one kill and two blocks.

Eleny Korn had 37 assists, 10 digs, three aces and one kill.

The Rebel coach noted he was impressed with the players in the third set when they rallied to take it 30-28 after they blew a late lead in the second set.

“That set the tone for set four, where we played our cleanest volleyball of the night and closed the door with a 25-12 win,” Kuechenmeister said.

USC is now 8-6 (2-2 Gopher Conference) and the Rebels were set to travel to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Thursday for a Gopher Conference match vs. the Buccaneers and at Nicollet on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Details on those matches will be in the next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.

This week the Rebels take on Alden Conger on Monday, Sept. 30, Medford at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and Faribault Bethlehem Academy on Thursday, Oct. 3.
