Titans use height to defeat Buccaneers

BEA hangs with TCU early but scoring drought puts them in a hole

The Tri-City United Titans made the most of their height advantage on both ends of the court when they came to Blue Earth on Dec. 20 to take on the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in girls basketball.

Tri-City held a 40-11 lead at the end of the first half on their way to a 69-22 victory.

The Titans used their height to score from close range while taking a 4-0 lead to start the game. However, the Bucs’ Lola Lundquist found some space in the paint and got the Bucs on the board with a soft 12-footer.

Lundquist then grabbed a loose ball on the Titan’s end of the court and dribbled through their defense to go coast-to-coast for a layup to tie the score at 4-4 three minutes into the contest.

After Tri-City United scored again to take a 6-4 lead, BEA utilized good ball movement to find Jessica Moore open under the basket. Moore’s shot went through the net and the game was tied at 6-6.

It was at that point the Titans began to pull away. TCU sank a couple of 3-pointers while putting together a 16-0 run over a five-minute period to take a 22-6 lead before BEA finally broke their scoring drought.

Shooting woes plagued the Bucs who were 8-for-27 (29.6 percent) from 2-point range and 2-for-20 (10 percent) from behind the arc. BEA did not have any free-throw attempts.

Meanwhile, the Titans made 25 of their 45 attempts (55.6 percent) from inside the arc. They were 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) from outside the arc and made four of their 10 (40 percent) shots from the charity stripe.

TCU had 42 rebounds to 26 for BEA. The Bucs committed 23 turnovers to 12 for the Titans.

Lola Lundquist led BEA with 13 points.

Myla Eastman and Elaena Schiltz each had five rebounds while Moore had four.

The Bucs hosted their holiday tournament on Dec. 27-28. They will return to action on Jan. 3 when they host the Fairmont Cardinals.
