Buc girls lose to Tigers and Cardinals

The Blue Earth Area girls faced a tough opponent when they played host to the Belle Plaine Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the BEA High School gymnasium.

Belle Plaine came into the game with a perfect 5-0 record in Section 2AA play while boasting an overall record of 7-4.

The Tigers took a 30-22 lead into the locker room at halftime before outscoring the Bucs 40-18 in the final stanza to go home with a 70-40 triumph over BEA.

The Maroon and Gold struggled to get the ball to fall through the hoop while going 9-for-33 (27.3 percent) from inside the arc and 5-for-26 (19.2 percent) from outside the arc. BEA made seven of their 11 attempts (63.6 percent) from the free-throw line.

Belle Plaine made 25 of their 56 2-point attempts (44.6 percent) but were only 4-for-20 (20 percent) from 3-point range. The Tigers went to the charity stripe 22 times and made eight of their shots (36.4 percent).

The Tigers held a huge 66-29 rebounding advantage over the Bucs. Turnovers were equal with each team having 16.

Lola Lundquist was the only BEA player to reach double figures in scoring with 25 points. Myla Eastman tallied six points and Carol Schrader finished with five.

Eastman led the Bucs with six rebounds followed by Lundquist, Ellaina Moore and Emerson Weir with three rebounds each.

Grace Schavey, Weir and Jessica Moore each had two assists.

Weir led BEA in steals with four.

Fairmont 71, BEA 24

The Fairmont Cardinals defense held the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers to only 12 points in each half and the Cardinals went home with a 71-24 victory over the Bucs when the two teams met in Blue Earth on Jan. 3.

Fairmont’s Brylee Miller opened the game with back-to-back baskets from behind the arc and the Cardinals never looked back.

By the time the buzzer sounded ending the first half, Fairmont held a 51-12 lead. The Cardinals outscored the Bucs 20-12 in the last 18 minutes to go home with the 47-point victory.

BEA was 7-for-25 (28 percent) from 2-point range compared to Fairmont who was 20-for-55 from inside the arc (36.4 percent).

Neither team shot particularly well from outside the arc. The Bucs were 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) and the Cards were 6-for-22 (27.3 percent).

BEA was 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) from the charity stripe while Fairmont was 13-for-20 (65 percent).

The Cardinals dominated on the inside and scored 40 of their points from the paint. They also held a 52-25 rebounding advantage over the Bucs.

BEA committed 30 turnovers compared to only eight for Fairmont.

Elaena Schiltz was the leading scorer for the Bucs with six points. Lola Lundquist had five, Emerson Weir and Jessica Moore had four each and Grace Schavey finished with three.

Lundquist led BEA in rebounds with six followed by Schiltz and Weir with five each.

After traveling to Pipestone for a game on Jan. 10, the Bucs will return home on Monday, Jan. 13 to host Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther.
