Things got a little rough in the USC versus Madelia basketball game. Above, CJ Schumann gets hit in the face while going to the basket.

The United South Central boys basketball team had a rough go of it when they faced off against the Madelia Blackhawks last Tuesday night, Jan. 7.

The Blackhawks took a commanding lead at half time and the Rebels lost by a score of 76-36.

The Rebels hung on for awhile against the unbeaten Blackhawks but lost control of the game with about six minutes left in the first half.

Madelia led 16-15 at the nine minute mark and by halftime they had gone on a 28-5 run for a 43-21 lead at the buzzer.

That lead would expand quickly in the second half to 30 as the Rebels could not get much going offensively, coach Adam Walker said.

“Madelia also shot very well from the field in the second half and we just didn’t have an answer,” he explained.

Zayden Schott led the Rebels with 12 points. Dylan Bonsack had seven points, Brody Steinhauer had five, Jayden Barnick four and Aiden Crabtree three.

As a team the Rebels made 9 of 23 for 2-point shots (39 percent), 4 of 19 for 3-point attempts (21 percent) and 6 of 15 for free throws (40 percent).

The Blackhawks were 24 of 37 for inside the arc (65 percent), 8 of 18 for outside the arc (44 percent) and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line (67 percent).

The Rebels had 16 rebounds to the Blackhawks 31, five assists to their 21, five steals to their 14, two blocked shots to their five and 18 turnovers to their 11.

Next for USC was a game at Nicollet on Thursday, Jan. 9, and a home game against Kenyon-Wanamingo on Friday, Jan. 10.

This week they host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and travel to Hayfield on Friday, Jan. 17.

Randolph 67, USC 62

The United South Central Rebels’ boys basketball lost a heart-breaker on Friday, Jan. 3, when they took on the Randolph Rockets.

USC lost the game 67-62 when their heroic comeback attempt fell just short.

The Rebels and Rockets went back and forth for all but the final four minutes of the first half.

Randolph led 25-23 before going on a 14-4 run to close the half with a 12 point lead, 39-27.

They would extend that lead to 17 in the second half before the Rebels mounted a great comeback, eventually cutting the lead down to three with about two minutes to play.

A turnover and a bucket by Randolph with 25 seconds left would prove to be the difference as USC missed a 3-point try with under 10 seconds left that would have cut it to a two-point difference.

Three Rebels hit double figures in scoring. Aiden Crabtree led the way with 14 points and also had 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Wyatt Sparks added 13 points and Dylan Stephens had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Zayden Schott and Dylan Bonsack each had seven points and CJ Schumann had six.

As a team the Rebels made 15 of their 28 2-point shots (54 percent) and 10 of their 25 3-point tries (40 percent), and 2 of 4 free throws (50 percent).

The Rockets were 15 of 26 for 2-pointers (58 percent), 11 of 35 for 3-pointers (31 percent) and 4 of 8 from the free throw line (50 percent).

Both teams had 29 rebounds and the Rebels had 18 assists to their 20, three steals to their seven, five blocks to their two and 13 turnovers to their 10.
