Buc wrestlers compete in Big South Conference Tournament

Three Blue Earth Area varsity wrestlers competed in the Big South Conference wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Jackson County Central High School.

Will Weerts, wrestling at 160 pounds, was tied at 14-14 after three periods in his opening-round match against Cael Entriken of JCC.

Weerts secured a 17-14 sudden victory when he scored a takedown in the first overtime period.

In his second match, Weerts was defeated by Waseca’s Slade Bennet who pinned the BEA sophomore at the 3:51 mark.

Weerts moved to the wrestlebacks where he faced Dawson Holtz of Luverne. Weerts won by a 7-1 decision to remain alive in the bracket.

Dirk Haynes of New Ulm Area won by a fall in 4:25 over Weerts to knock the BEA wrestler out of the medal competition.

At 114 pounds, BEA’s Drake Engelby received a bye in the first round before losing by a pin in 1:38 to Mason Fruechte of Pipestone Area.

Engelby faced Braydon Miller of New Ulm Area next and was eliminated from the tourney when Miller won by a fall at the 39 second mark.

Timmy Nagel met Kyler Thier of JCC in the first round at 127 pounds and lost by a 10-2 major decision. In the wrestlebacks, Kane Johnson defeated Nagel in overtime by a 6-3 sudden victory score.

The Bucs hosted a triangular meet on Thursday, Jan. 16.
