USC’s Taylor Schroeder, (holding the basketball) was joined by her teammates in celebrating the senior guard scoring her 1,000 career point. The event happened during USC’s 51-41 win over Mankato Loyola.

After going on a five-game winning streak, the United South Central girls basketball team suffered a loss when they took on the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The Rebels lost by a score of 58-48.

Olivia Bungum led the Rebel girls again, scoring 19 points in the game, and grabbing six rebounds.

Taylor Schroeder scored 12 points and also came up with six rebounds.

Ivy O’Rourke and Alivia Bruegger each scored six points, with Bruegger also coming down with 10 rebounds.

Chloe Bullerman led the team in rebounds, coming up with 13 of them. She also had five points and five blocked shots.

Next up for the Rebel girls was a game on Thursday, Jan. 16, when they were scheduled to host Hayfield.

This week they will host Medford on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday, Jan. 23, also at home.

USC 51, Mankato Loyola 41

The United South Central Rebel girls had a lot to celebrate during their game on Jan. 13, against Mankato Loyola.

First off they defeated the Crusaders by a score of 51-41.

Secondly, the Rebels’ Taylor Schroeder scored the 1,000th point of her high school career during the game. She scored 11 points during the game.

Olivia Bungum led the team in scoring with 19 points. She also nabbed six rebounds. Ivy O’Rourke added nine points to the team’s total tally.

Alivia Bruegger and Chloe Bullerman each had six points. Bruegger had 14 rebounds to lead the team, while Bullerman was close behind with 13 grabs as well as having eight blocked shots.

USC 78, K-W 59

The United South Central girls’ basketball team had another outstanding game when they faced the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights on Friday, Jan. 10.

The Rebel girls had four players in double figures for scoring on their way to a big 78-59 victory.

Olivia Bungum led the way with a big scoring night, hitting for 33 points. She also had 14 rebounds in the game.

Taylor Schroeder had 16 points, Alivia Bruegger tallied 15 points and Ivy O’Rourke hit for 12 points. Bruegger also tied Bungum for most rebounds with 14.

Next up for the Rebels was a game set for Monday night, Jan. 13, against Loyola, followed by a game on Tuesday, Jan. 14 against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and then one on Thursday, Jan. 16 when they were set to host Hayfield.

USC 65, Waseca 47

The United South Central Rebels were firing on all cylinders in the opening minutes of their girls basketball game against the visiting Waseca Bluejays on Thursday, Jan 9.

USC took an early 10-0 lead just over two minutes into the game and never trailed. The Rebels led 24-16 at the half on their way to a 65-47 victory over the Bluejays.

Alivia Bruegger utilized her height and skill around the basket to score seven of the Rebels’ first 10 points.

Two threes by Ivy O’Rourke and a drive to the basket by Olivia Bungum for two more points gave USC a 15-4 advantage with 11:45 to play in the first half.

USC cooled off a bit and Waseca hit a couple of shots from outside the arc to trim the Rebels’ lead to eight points at 24-16 heading into the intermission.

The Bluejays made a run at the Rebels in the second half. With 11:16 to play in the game, Waseca’s Gracie Morgan swished a 10-footer from the baseline to cut USC’s advantage to four points at 32-28.

USC responded with an 11-0 run beginning with another inside shot by Bruegger to increase the Rebels’ lead to 34-28.

Olivia Bungum grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup and an eight point USC lead. Next, the Rebels broke the Bluejays press and Taylor Schoeder took the ball to the hoop for an easy basket and a 38-28 lead for the home team.

Bruegger converted an offensive rebound into two more points and then stepped outside the arc and connected for three more points and a 43-28 USC lead.

Waseca’s Mia Kanewischer’s 3-pointer with 8:25 remaining in the game ended USC’s run but the damage had been done and the Rebels went on to claim the 18-point victory.

Bruegger finished the night with a double-double. The freshman forward had 27 points and 12 rebounds. Schroeder tallied 12 points, O’Rourke had 10 and Bungum finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

The win improved USC’s record to 7-6 while the loss dropped Waseca’s record to 1-13.
