Buccaneer wrestlers compete in two triangulars

BEA’s Jason Casey battles Waseca’s Owen Sommers in the 107-pound match on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Blue Earth Area hosted a triangular wrestling meet on Tuesday, Jan 28, with Luverne and Waseca.
In the first meet of the night, the Luverne Cardinals defeated BEA 53-24.
The Cardinals opened the contest with victories by falls at both 107 and 114 pounds to take a 12-0 lead.
A pin by BEA’s Timmy Nagel over Ryder Kobernusz in 54 seconds at 121 pounds and Drake Engelby’s victory by a forfeit at 127 pounds tied the score at 12-12.
Pins by Luverne at 133, 139 and 145 pounds put the Cardinals on top 30-12 and a technical fall by Luverne at 152 pounds made the score 35-12 in Luverne’s favor.
The 160 pound match saw BEA’s Will Weerts trailing Cameron McCrary 6-3 after the first period. Weerts battled back to earn a second-period pin to cut Luverne’s advantage to 35-18.
The Cardinals won by a forfeit at 172 pounds and by pins at 189 and 215 pounds to give them 53 total points.
Chase Gambell of the Bucs received a forfeit for BEA’s final points and make the final score 53-24 with Luverne getting the victory.
Waseca 45, BEA 28
The match at 107 pounds was an exciting one with Waseca’s Owen Sommers and BEA’s Jason Casey exchanging the lead multiple times during their match. In the end, it was Sommers who prevailed 19-15 to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead.
The Bucs won the next three matches to take an 18-3 lead.
Cody Tolzmann received a forfeit at 114 pounds before his BEA teammate, Drake Engelby, pinned Jackson Janike in 1:28.
Timmy Nagel received a forfeit at 127 pounds to provide the Bucs with a 15-point lead.
Pins by Waseca at 133 and 139 pounds narrowed the score to 18-15 with the Bucs still out front.
Layden Bassett’s pin in 3:38 over Jaiden Schafer of Waseca extended BEA’s lead to 24-15.
The Bluejays picked up wins by falls at both 152 and 160 pounds to overtake the Bucs by a 27-24 score.
A 16-8 major decision by BEA’s Will Weerts over Ton Bethke put the Bucs in front again at 28-27.
The Bluejays closed out the contest with a win by a forfeit at 189 pounds and pins at 215 and 285 pounds to make the final score 45-28 in Waseca’s favor.
Waseca was also victorious over Luverne 43-29.
New Ulm Triangular
The Blue Earth Area wrestlers were back in action on Thursday, Jan. 23, when they traveled to New Ulm for a triangular meet with the Tri-City United Titans and the host New Ulm Eagles.
New Ulm defeated BEA 64-9 and was also victorious over TCU by a score of 65-4.
TCU was able to get the win over BEA 49-20.
New Ulm 65, BEA 9
The Eagles won the first nine matches before BEA’s 160-pounder, Will Weerts, scored a 12-5 decision over New Ulm’s Dirk Haynes.
The Bucs other win came at 285 pounds when Chase Gambell won by a fall in 3:54 over Henry Waloch.
New Ulm won by falls at 107, 114, 145, 152, and 215 pounds.
The Eagles won four matches by forfeits. Those were at 121, 127, 172 and 189 pounds.
The other victories by New Ulm were technical falls at 133 and 139 pounds.
TCU 49, BEA 20
The Titans took a 6-0 lead when 107-pounder Owen Delander pinned Jason Casey in 2:52.
Drake Engelby’s 17-2 technical fall triumph over Riley O’Meara gave the Bucs five points and cut the Titans’ lead to 6-5.
BEA forfeited the 121-pound match and TCU’s Gage Factor won by a 12-2 major decision over Timmy Nagel to extend the Titans’ lead to 16-5.
TCU picked up six more points at 133 pounds when BEA forfeited the match to Tucker Skluzacek.
A pin by the Titans’ Keegan O’Meara over Colin Alfson at 139 pounds made the score 28-5 in favor of TCU.
In the 145-pound match, Blake Herman of the Titans won an 8-2 decision over Layden Bassett to give TCU a 31-5 lead.
The Titans’ lead became 37-5 when Nathan Blaschko pinned BEA’s Colton Tolzmann in 3:25 at 152 pounds.
Will Weerts won a 21-20 decision over Maxxis Ross to make the score 37-8 with the Titans on top.
The Bucs forfeited the matches at 172 and 189 pounds which resulted in the Titans extending their lead to 49-8.
BEA’s Jacob Gambell pinned Jonathan Carric in 1:10 at 215 pounds and Chase Gambell received a forfeit at 285 pounds to give the Bucs 12 more points and make the final score 49-20 with the Titans picking up the victory.
