Longhorns fall to Knights in dual meet
The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns wrestling team dug themselves a deep hole when they took on the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and ended up losing 42-20.
The Knights won the first six matches and the Longhorns were behind 25-0.
Wyatt Walters broke the losing streak at 145 pounds when he defeated Talan Osborne by a 9-3 decision. MR/USC was finally on the scoreboard, behind 25-3.
At 152 pounds Brayden Mithun lost by a technical fall to Ryan Palmer and MR/USC was down 30-3.
The Longhorns won the next three matches. At 160 pounds Byron Getchell won a 15-0 technical fall over Nathan Sickler, Kolt Bullerman pinned Colin Peterson at 172 and Max Fuller won by a fall in sudden victory overtime over Solomon Maxwell at 189.
The score then was 30-20.
At 215 pounds Dizel Butler lost by a fall to Nick Slater and at 285 Longhorn Jadon Parker also lost by a fall to Mason Adams, making the final 42 to 20.
MR/USC Triangular
The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns’ wrestling team won one match and lost one during a triangular meet they hosted on Jan. 23 in Mapleton. The Longhorns defeated the Sibley East Wolverines 53-18, but lost to the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights by a score of 40 to 21.

The Longhorns used six forfeits by the Wolverines to cruise to a 53-18 win.
Austin Niebuhr at 107 pounds and Alex Walser at 114 both won by a forfeit to get things going.
Riley Sparks then won by a 19-0 technical fall over Alex Thomes at 121 pounds, followed by another Wolverine forfeit to Noah Gonzalez at 127.
Jace Ignaszewski lost by a fall to Tanner Johnson at 133 pounds, but Isaiah Gonzalez won by another Sibley East forfeit at 139.
MR/USC’s Wyatt Walter lost a 6-0 decision to Benito Diaz at 145 pounds, before the Longhorns won the next four matches. Brayden Mithun won by a fall over Lucas Schulte at 152, Byron Getchell also won by a fall over Callen Petty at 160, and Kolt Bullerman at 172 and Max Fuller at 189 both won by forfeits.
At 215 pounds, MR/USC’s Dizel Butler lost a 4-0 decision to Gianny Lopez and at 285 the Longhorns forfeited.
KW 40, MR/USC 21
The Longhorns found themselves behind 26-3 halfway through the match with the Knights.
MR/USC’s only win in those first seven matches came at 127 pounds when Noah Gonzalez took a 7-0 decision over K-W’s Ryan LaCanne. Their next win came at 145 pounds when Wyatt Walters took a 12-0 major decision over Luke Johnson that cut the lead to 26-7.
The Knights won the next match at 152 pounds when MR/USC’s Brayden Mithun lost a very close 10-9 decision to Logan Trump, making the score 29-7.
The Longhorns would win the next two matches to get close at 29-18. Byron Getchell took a 15-0 technical fall over Myles Thompson at 160 pounds and Kolt Bullerman pinned Ryan Rechtzigel at 172.
The Longhorns’ Max Fuller lost a 19-2 technical fall to Brennan Flotterud at 189 pounds, but Dizel Butler won by a 4-0 decision over Knute Ronningen at 215. MR/USC had to forfeit at 285, making the final score 40-21.
