Bucs have busy day at St. Agnes duals

The Blue Earth Area wrestling team competed in the St. Agnes Duals on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The Bucs had five matches for the day. The other teams participating at the event were Buffalo, St. Agnes, Redwood Valley, Benson and Lake City.

Buffalo 54, BEA 18

The Bucs opened the day against the Buffalo Bison.

Although BEA took an early 12-0 lead, Buffalo won 10 of the remaining 11 matches to gain a 54-18 victory.

Jason Casey of the Bucs received a forfeit at 107 pounds before his teammate, Drake Engelby, pinned Levi Becker in the 114-pound match to put BEA on top 12-0.

The Bison won by a decision at 121 pounds and by a forfeit at 127 pounds to cut the Bucs’ advantage to 12-9.

At 133 pounds, BEA’s Avery Asmus pinned Logan Karstens with 15 seconds remaining in the match to extend the Bucs’ lead to 18-9.

Buffalo won by a technical fall at 139 pounds and by a pin at 145 pounds to move in front of BEA by a 20-18 score.

The Bison received forfeits at 152, 189, and 215 pounds, won by a major decision at 172 pounds and were victorious by pins at 160 and 285 pounds to account for their remaining 34 points.

St. Agnes 49, BEA 23

Second round action found Blue Earth Area facing the St. Agnes Aggies with St. Agnes coming out on top 49-23.

Danile Hunt of the Aggies won by a fall over Jason Casey at 107 pounds and the Aggies’ Peter Brownell defeated the Bucs’ Drake Engelby by a 10-5 decision to put the Bucs in a 9-0 hole to start the contest.

BEA’s Avery Asmus received a forfeit at 121 pounds and Timmy Nagel won by a fall in 54 seconds over Freddy Witzel at 127 pounds to give the Bucs a 12-9 lead.

St. Agnes received a forfeit at 133 pounds and Joseph Pepin won by a fall over Collin Alfson at 139 to give the Aggies a 21-12 lead.

BEA’s Layden Basset cut the Buffalo lead to 21-17 when he triumphed by a 16-1 technical fall over Charlie Graner.

St. Agnes closed out the contest by winning the remaining six matches – one by a major decision, three by fall and two by forfeit.

Redwood Valley 60, BEA 18

The Bucs could only manage three wins when they faced the Redwood Valley Cardinals in the third round which resulted in a Cardinals’ 60-18 victory.

After Redwood Valley won by a fall at 107 pounds, BEA’s Drake Engelby tied the score at 6-6 when he pinned Brayden Sweeman at 114 pounds.

A pin by the Bucs’ Timmy Nagel over Dominick Adams at 121 pounds momentarily put the Maroon and Gold in front 12-6.

The Cardinals won the next nine matches. They won by falls at 127, 139, 145, 152, and 160 pounds. Redwood Valley won by forfeits at 133, 172, 189, and 215 pounds.

In the last match between the two teams, BEA’s Chase Gambell won by a fall over Adam Mohr.

Benson 49, BEA 18

In round four, Blue Earth Area was defeated by the Benson Braves 49-18.

After Benson won the match by a fall at 107 pounds, Drake Engelby got BEA on the board with a 10-5 decision over Sam Svingen at 114 pounds.

Trailing 6-3, the Bucs momentarily grabbed the lead when Avery Asmus pinned Coy Kobbermann is 1:02 in the 121-pound match to make the score 9-6 in BEA’s favor.

The Braves picked up wins in the next four matches to go back on top by a scored of 27-9.

The Bucs’ Danny Nagel won by a 9-6 decision over Eshon Freeman at 152 pounds to cut the Braves’ advantage to 24-12.

Benson won the next four matches to increase their lead to 49-12

BEA’s Chase Gambell won the final match of the contest by pinning DeMarcus Neal in 32 seconds in the 285-pound match.

Lake City 42, BEA 31

The Lake City Tigers handed Blue Earth Area a 42-31 loss in the Bucs’ final match of the day.

Open spots at four different weights hurt the Bucs and provided Lake City with 24 points.

BEA’s Drake Engelby won by a fall over Lincoln Walters at 114 pounds and Timmy Nagel won by a 19-3 technical fall over Parker Atkinson at 121 pounds to give BEA an early 11-6 lead.

After falling behind 24-11, Layden Basset won by a 4-1 decision at 145 pounds, Colton Tolzman won by a 15-0 technical fall at 152 and Will Weerts won by a fall at 160 to put BEA in the lead 25-24.

Three more forfeits by the Bucs gave Lake City 42 points before BEA’s Chase Gambell ended the dual by pinning Karl Meyer at 285 pounds.
