Longhorns split at Windom Triangular

Placed fifth out of 14 teams at their Takedown on 22 Tourney

The Longhorns had a busy week of wrestling. They wrestled in a triangular and quadrangular meet and hosted their own tournament, Takedown on 22. Above, Waylon Simon is shown in action controlling his opponent.

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns wrestling team won one match and lost one, at the Windom Triangular Meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The Longhorns defeated host Windom-Mountain Lake 44-27, but lost to Minneota 48-16.

MR/USC 44, W-ML 27

The match between MR/USC and Windom-Mountain Lake was fairly close much of the way, with the Longhorns pulling ahead in the last five matches.

Alex Walser got things going for MR/USC with a win by a fall over Evan Kish at 107 pounds. W-ML came back and tied it at 6-6, when Longhorn Austin Sanders lost by a fall to Jacob Lopez at 114. They also won at 121 when Riley Sparks lost by a fall to Matthew Voehl.

MR/USC got back within one at 12-11 when Noah Gonzalez won by a 16-1 technical fall over Hyatt Hansen at 127 pounds. Then Isaiah Gonzalez got a fall over Abraham Mendoza at 133, and Waylon Simon also got a fall over Dagen Hansen at 139 and the Longhorns had the lead at 23-12.

W-ML won the next two matches making the score close at 23-21 still in favor of the Longhorns. Shaune Peterson lost a 16-0 technical fall to Kameron Koerner at 145. At 152 Wyatt Walters lost a 13-2 major decision to Damien Davison.

The Longhorns won the next two matches to make it 35-21. Kolt Bullerman won by a fall over Waylon Winters at 160 pounds and Byron Getchell also won by a fall over Damian Aguirre at 172.

Max Fuller lost by a fall to Sam Hernandez at 189 pounds, Dizel Butler won a 4-2 decision over Graycen Hansen at 215 and the Longhorns’ Jadon Parker won by forfeit at 285.

That made the final 44-27.

Minneota 48,

MR/USC 16

The Longhorns fell behind right away against powerhouse Minneota and only won three matches on the way to a 48-16 loss.

MR/USC lost the first four matches and found themselves behind 18-0.

Noah Gonzalez finally got some points for the team when he scored a 17-2 technical fall over Quinton Anderson at 127 pounds. That cut the Vikings lead to 18-5.

At 133 pounds, Isaiah Gonzalez won by a 20-2 technical fall over Bryce Gorecki and the score was then 18-10 in favor of Minneota.

The Vikings won the 139 pound match to make it 23-10, but the Longhorns’ Shaune Peterson won by a forfeit at 145 pounds to make it fairly close at 23-16.

However, that was the last points MR/USC would get, with the final score at 48-16 in favor of Minneota.

Takedown on 22

The Maple River/United South Central wresting team took fifth place, out of 14 teams, at their own invitational tournament titled “Takedown on 22.”

The tournament was held on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Maple River High School.

The Longhorns scored 120 points for their fifth place finish. In first place was Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran with 225 points.

In second place was Mankato East with 150 points, Jackson County Central was third with 139, New Prague fourth with 123.5 and the Longhorns were fifth.

In sixth place was WEM-JWP with 101 points, seventh was Martin County Red Bulls with 86, Owatonna eighth with 74.5, NRHEG ninth with 61.5, Sibley East10th at 55.5, Austin 11th at 53, Mankato West 12th at 36.5, TCU 13th at 21 and Chaska-Chanhassen 14th at 12.

MR/USC had one first place finisher, two in second place, two in third place and two in sixth place.

Byron Getchell, wrestling at 160 pounds, was the Longhorn to take first place.

Getchell won his first round match with a fall over Atley Strack of Sibley East, in one minute. He won his quarterfinal match with a pin over Austin Stein of Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran, in two minutes. And, he won his semifinal match with a pin over Cael Entriken of Jackson County Central in three minutes.

In the match for first place Getchell won by a 6-4 decision over Bennett Blom of Mankato East.

Noah Gonzalez took second at 127 pounds.

He won his quarterfinals round match with a 10-0 major decision over Gage Factor of Tri-City United. He won his semifinals match with an injury withdrawal by Carson Petry of WEM-JWP.

In the match for first place, Gonzalez lost by a 17-2 technical fall to Titan Frederichs of WM-ML, and took second place.

Isaiah Gonzalez was the other second place finisher for the Longhorns at 133 pounds.

In the quarterfinals he won a 4-1 decision over Brady Murphy of WEM-JWP. In the semifinals he won by fall over Sully Marx of WM-ML.

Then in the first place match Gonzalez lost by a 20-5 technical fall to Pierce Rohman of Martin County Red Bulls, and took second place.

At 107 pounds MR/USC’s Alex Walser took third place after wrestling in five matches.

He lost his quarterfinals match, then came back and won his consolation round two and three matches by pins. In the consolation semifinal round he took a 10-7 decision over Miles Aase of Owatonna.

Then in the third place match Walser took a close 5-3 decision for the third place win.

Wyatt Walters took the other third place win at 145 pounds.

Walters won his first round match and his quarterfinals matches with pins. In the semifinal match he lost a close 3-0 decision to Benito Diaz of Sibley East. He came back to win his consolation semifinal match with a fall over Soren Ehmke of Mankato West.

He won the match for third place by pinning Karson Tufte of WM-ML.

Brayden Mithun took sixth place at 152 pounds. He lost his first match and then won the next two. He lost in the consolation semifinals and then lost by an 11-3 major decision to Mason Deutsch in the match for fifth place.

At 189 pounds Max Fuller also placed sixth. He lost his first two matches and then lost by a fall to Logan Risser of Owatonna in the match for fifth place.

Westfield Quadrangular

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns wrestling team won two matches and lost one at the Westfield Quadrangular held on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The Longhorns bested the host Westfield Razorbacks 38-31, and defeated St. Charles 52-18. They lost to Apple Valley by a score of 40 to 30.

MR/USC 38, Westfield 31

This match stayed fairly close throughout the contest, but the Longhorns were able to get a lead and keep it for the win.

Alex Walser got things going at 107 pounds with a 7-4 decision for a 3-0 lead. Troy Hollister lost by a fall at 114 pounds and the Longhorns were behind 6-3. It was the only time they were behind during the match.

Riley Sparks won by a fall at 121 pounds to put the Longhorns in the lead at 9-6. Noah Gonzalez won by a fall at 124 and Isaiah Gonzalez also won by a fall at 133 and MR/USC was ahead 21-6.

The Razorbacks won the next three matches and the score got close at 21-19, with the Longhorns still in the lead.

MR/USC won the next three matches to go up 38-19. Byron Getchell won by a fall at 160 pounds, Kolt Bullerman won by a 17-0 technical fall at 172 pounds and Max Fuller won by a fall at 189.

The Longhorns lost the next two matches by falls, making the final score 38-31.

MR/USC 52,

St. Charles 18

The Longhorns powered their way to a big 52-18 victory against St. Charles.

Alex Walser got things going once again with a fall at 107 pounds putting MR/USC up 6-0. Austin Sanders was pinned at 114 which tied the match 6-6, but it was not close after that.

The Longhorns won the next three matches. Riley Sparks won a 13-5 major decision at 121 pounds, Noah Gonzalez won by a fall at 127 and Isaiah Gonzalez also won by a fall at 133.

Jace Ignaszewski lost by a fall at 139 pounds, but Wyatt Walters won by a fall at 145 to make the score 28-12. Brayden Mithun lost a 10-3 decision at 152 pounds and the score was 28-15,

The Longhorns would win the next four matches to go up 52-15.

Byron Getchell at 160 pounds and Kolt Bullerman at 172 would both win by a fall, and Max Fuller at 189 and Dizel Butler at 215 both won by a forfeit.

At 285 pounds Jaydon Parker lost a 5-1 decision and the final was 52-18.

Apple Valley 40,

MR/USC 30

The MR/USC Longhorns dug themselves into a hole to start the match against Apple Valley, losing the first three matches.

They fell behind 16-0, but came back twice to get within one point of tying the match up.

Noah Gonzalez, at 127 pounds, was the first to score some points for the Longhorns when he won a 10-4 decision. Isaiah Gonzalez won by pin at 133 pounds and Waylon Simon, at 139, also won by a pin.

That put MR/USC just one point behind at 16-15. Apple Valley won the next two matches to take a 28-15 lead.

At 160 pounds, Byron Getchell won by a pin, and at 172 pounds, Kolt Bullerman also won by a fall, and that put the Longhorns right back at one point behind at 28-27.

Apple Valley won at 189 pounds to lead 34-27, but Dizel Butler won a 5-3 decision at 215 putting it close at 34-30. Apple Valley won the last match and the final became 40-30.
