Will Bromeland, center, is joined by BEA coaches Cody Sukalski, Spencer Monson, Colby Swanson and Matt Schonrock after the 6-foot-3 junior reached the 1,000 point mark for his career against MCW on Feb. 6.

Will Bromeland’s 3-pointer with 6:45 to go in the first half gave the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers a 27-23 lead over their hosts, the Redwood Valley Cardinals, when the two teams met for a Big South Conference game on Feb. 11.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, Bromeland’s points were the last they would score for the remainder of the first half. As a result, the Cardinals finished the first stanza in front of the Bucs 46-27. BEA outscored Redwood Valley 55-49 in the second half, but it was not enough to overtake the Cardinals, who won the game 95-82.

The loss gave the Bucs an overall record of nine wins and 13 losses while the Cardinals improved to 16-8 overall.

Both teams shot the ball well from the field. BEA was 14-for-24 (58.3 percent) from 2-point range while Redwood Valley was 16-for-23 (69.6 percent) on their 2-point attempts.

The Bucs were 17-for-39 (43.6 percent) shooting 3-point shots compared to the Cardinals, who were 19-for-44 (43.2 percent) from 3-point range.

BEA made all three of their free-throw attempts. Redwood Valley made 60 percent (6-for-10) of their shots from the charity stripe.

The edge in rebounding went to the Bucs by a 34-28 margin. BEA scored 26 points in the paint compared to 30 for Redwood Valley.

The Bucs committed 15 turnovers while the Cards were charged with six.

Bromeland made five 3-pointers in the game on his way to a team-high 31 points. Branson Hauskins tallied 20 points, Gage Barker had 12 and Sully Dahlberg finished with 10.

Pacing the Bucs with nine rebounds was Dahlberg. He was followed by Bromeland with five.

Caden Juba finished with seven assists and Barker had five.

After hosting Pipestone Area on Feb. 13, BEA will travel to Worthington to take on the Trojans on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Their final regular season game is scheduled for Feb. 25, when they are set to host Watertown-Elysian-Morristown.

Belle Plaine 90, BEA 86 OT

It took an overtime period for the Belle Plaine Tigers to overcome the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers when the two teams met on the Bucs’ home floor on Feb. 7. The final score had Belle Plaine winning by a 90-86 margin.

Although BEA lost, they played much better than when the two teams met on Jan. 7. That game had Belle Plaine winning by 34 points.

The Bucs led by 10 points, 46-36, after the first 18 minutes of play in their latest contest. However, the Tigers outscored the Maroon and Gold 15-4 to begin the final stanza while taking a 51-50 lead with 13:41 left to play in the game.

BEA, behind Branson Hauskins’ five second-half 3-pointers, kept the game close and the score was tied 77-77 with 2:40 remaining in the game.

The Tigers broke the tie with 45 seconds showing on the game clock to go on top 79-77. BEA’s Caden Juba hit Sully Dahlberg with a back-door pass for an easy bucket to tie the game at 79-79 with 29 seconds to go in the game. Belle Plaine missed a shot with eight seconds left and BEA missed a last-second 3-point attempt at the buzzer and the game went into overtime.

Gage Barker put the Bucs ahead in the extra period when he scored after getting an offensive rebound.

BEA’s lead was shortlived however when the Tigers scored on a 3-pointer eight seconds after Barker’s basket. Belle Plaine maintained their lead on their way to their 90-86 victory.

BEA shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from 2-point range and 36.2 percent (17-for-47) from 3-point range. The Bucs made 75 percent (3-for-4) of their free throws.

Belle Plaine was 24-for-33 (72.7 percent) from inside the arc and 11-for-37 (29.7 percent) from outside the arc. They made nine of their 14 (64.3 percent) free-throw attempts.

The Tigers had a 34-32 edge in rebounding and scored 44 points in the paint compared to 28 for the Bucs.

BEA had 12 turnovers and Belle Plaine committed 13.

The leading scorer for the Bucs was Hauskins who made nine 3-pointers on his way to a 29-point performance. Will Bromeland finished with 27 points, Barker had 16 and Jacob Grandgenett finished with 12.

Barker and Dahlberg each finished with seven rebounds. Caden Juba led the Bucs with 10 assists.

BEA 85, MCW 57

Blue Earth Area’s Will Bromeland scored his 1,000th career point and Sully Dahlberg hit four consecutive 3-pointers in the first half to help the Buccaneers defeat the Martin County West Mavericks 85-57 on the Mavericks’ home court on Feb. 6.

The Bucs were trailing 13-10 six minutes into the game when Dahlberg scored 12 consecutive points for BEA to one free throw for the Mavericks to put the Bucs on top 22-14 with nine and a half minutes to play before intermission.

BEA had built their lead to 10 points at 37-27 when Bromeland scored on a drive with 3:02 to play in the first half. Bromeland’s basket made him a member of the 1,000-point club for the Bucs.

By the time the first half came to an end, BEA led MCW 47-33.

The Maroon and Gold outscored the Mavericks by 14 points in the second half on their way to their 85-57 triumph.

The Bucs were 23-for-33 (69.7 percent) from inside the arc and 11-for-28 (39.3 percent) from outside the arc. BEA made 66.7 percent of their free throws by going 6-for-9 at the free-throw line.

MCW was 11-for-33 (33.3 percent) on 2-point attempts and 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) from 3-point range. They made 11 of their 25 (44 percent) shots from the charity stripe.
