Area wrestlers compete at State Tourney

Noah Gonzalez makes it to second day but no wrestlers place

The Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament concluded on Saturday, March 1. All four area wrestlers who competed in the individual brackets came home without placing this year.

Blue Earth Area’s Timmy Nagel went into the tournament with a record of 26 wins and 16 losses. The junior grappler earned his trip to State at 121 pounds by finishing second at the Section 2A Meet.

Nagel’s opponent in the opening round at State was Keegan VonEnde of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River. VonEnde entered the State Tournament with a 25-10 record and was the champion in Section 8A.

VonEnde defeated Nagel by a 13-1 major decision. In his next match, VonEnde lost to eventual State Champion Miklo Hernandez from Pipestone Area. VonEnde’s defeat eliminated Nagel from the tournament.

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns had three individual wrestlers qualify for the Class AA State Tournament.

Wrestling at 127 pounds, sophomore Noah Gonzalez won his first match over Nolan Fettig of Alexandria Area by a 14-3 major decision to advance to the quarterfinal round against Vicente Lopez-Marsh of Minneapolis Edison.

Lopez-Marsh was able to defeat Gonzalez by a 12-7 decision which sent Gonzalez to the consolation rounds.

Gonzalez won his first match in the consolations over Henry Prestegaard of Cretin-Derham Hall by a 12-0 decision. In the second round of the consolation matches, Gonzalez was defeated by Adam Parish of Cannon Falls by a 12-2 major decision. The loss to Parish knocked Gonzalez out of the tournament.

Senior Isaiah Gonzalez, wrestling at 133 pounds, lost his opening round match to Kadin Martin of Grand Rapids by a 13-6 decision. Martin lost his next match to end Gonzalez’s run at the tourney.

Byron Getchell, another Longhorns’ senior, lost his first match at 160 pounds to Slade Barnett of Waseca by a 4-2 decision. Barnett was defeated in the next round which meant that Getchell was eliminated from the tournament.

In the team portion of the tournament, the representative from Section 2A, the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area Knights came home with a third-place trophy when they defeated the Jackson County Central Huskies 34-23.

Staples-Motley won the State Class A Team Championship with a 33-16 triumph over Chatfield.

The champion of the Class AA was the Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran Royals who defeated Kasson-Mantorville 33-20. The Royals came out of Section 2AA which is the section the Longhorns compete in.
