Bucs fall to Panthers, Bluejays and Cardinals
The Blue Earth Area softball team went on the road on Tuesday, May 13, to battle the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers.
The Panthers only outhit the Bucs by a 10-8 margin but took advantage of eight BEA errors to earn a 14-2 victory.
NRHEG scored four runs in each of the first two innings. They added two more in the bottom of the third and four more in the bottom of the fourth to account for their 14 runs.
BEA scored one run in the top of the second inning on a lead-off home run by Reagan Machacek.
The Bucs’ other run came in the top of the fourth inning. Ava Grant singled to lead off the inning. Kailey Boettcher came in as a courtesy runner for Grant and stole second base. Boettcher scored on a single to center field by Machacek.
In addition to Machacek’s two hits, Aubrey Skaden and Jessi James also had two hits each.
Section 2AA playoff action begins on May 20.
Waseca 12, BEA 6
A five-run seventh inning pushed the Waseca Bluejays past the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in softball action at Wilson Field on Saturday, May 10.
The Bucs were leading 5-4 after five innings but the Jays scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead before their seventh-inning outburst put the game out of reach.
Waseca got on the board first with one run in the top of the second inning. They increased their lead to 2-0 with another run in the top of the third inning.
BEA tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Jessi James hit a one-out double to get things rolling for the Bucs in the third inning. The Jays got a strike out for the second out of the inning before Aubrey Skaden and Ava Grant each walked to load the bases. A single by Reagan Machacek drove in James and Skaden to tie the game at 2-2.
Skaden started out BEA’s three-run fifth inning by stroking a double to left field. A walk to Grant put runners on first and second base.
An error on a pop fly hit by Machacek allowed Skaden to score and Grant to reach third base.
With Laura Steinhauer at the plate, Machacek stole second base to put two runners into scoring position. Steinhauer then hit an infield single. However, both runners had to hold up which left the bases loaded for the next batter, Abigail Greff, who hit a single to drive in Grant.
A short pop-up to the pitcher by Sara Wirth resulted in a double play with Machacek being thrown out at third base and the other two runners holding at first and second base.
A single by Lullianna Frank drove Steinhauer home with BEA’s third run of the inning to give the Bucs a 5-4 lead before the Jays rallied in the last two innings to take a 12-5 lead.
BEA did score one run in the bottom of the seventh. Steinhauer doubled and advanced to third on a single by Greff. A ground out by Wirth drove Steinhauer home with the Bucs’ final run of the game.
Waseca’s 12 runs came on 17 hits. The Jays committed one error. BEA scored their six runs on 12 hits. They were charged with three errors.

The Luverne Cardinals come to Blue Earth on Thursday, May 8 and swept a doubleheader from the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers.
The Cardinals won the first game 18-4 in five innings and the second game 19-4 in four innings.
