The Genesis Classical Academy (GCA) Griffins Trap Team just recorded week four of five in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.

With week four’s scores yet to be considered, the Griffins sit in fifth place in Class 1A Conference 4 among eight other schools.

Leading the team is sophomore Lindsey Lawrence, who is also the top female shooter in the conference. Despite a short program history and mostly young athletes, the Griffins also have others doing well in the conference. Freshman Mikaela Bonnema currently holds third place among the females in the conference, Annika Bonnema is in fifth, and Makenna Krause in sixth. A returning junior, Jacob Stensland, made the top 25 males in the conference and holds the seventh spot.

The Griffins had a gusty night of clays on Monday, May 12 for week four’s competition. Despite the conditions, seventh grader Sam Lawrence and sixth grader Brylee Bonnema, each in their first year, recorded their personal bests with 32 and 28. Top gun for the night was L. Lawrence with 42.

Steve Kastning and Jamie Bonnema have been coaching the team since they began competition five years ago when trap was introduced to GCA for its first sport in the athletics program.

The Griffins will close the conference season with week 5 competition on Monday, May 19, at Center Creek Gun Club. Ten Griffins will be competing in Alexandria at the championship tournament on June 9 against all Class 1A schools in Minnesota.
