USC defeats upset-minded Springfield
Rebels move on to next round of Section 2A after 1-0 victory

USC’s Addison Mithun slides safely into home with the only run of the game in the Rebels’ 1-0 victory over the Springfield Tigers in Section 2A Softball Tournament action on Thursday, May 22.
The United South Central Rebels’ softball team did it again.
They won another game in thrilling fashion by a score of 1 to 0. This time the slim victory came in the second round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament and propelled the Rebels to the third round.
The No. 1-seeded USC Rebels downed the No. 9-seeded Springfield Tigers 1-0 on Thursday, May 22, in Wells. They were next slated to play the No. 5-seeded Sleepy Eye Indians on Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
If they win that game they would play again on Saturday, at noon, for the Section championship.
USC played Sleepy Eye during the season and won a hotly contested 3-2 victory over the Indians.
On Thursday, the game against Springfield was much closer than had been expected. The Tigers, who were 6-18, put up a real battle against the 19-0 Rebels.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning when USC scored on a sacrifice fly. USC only had four hits in the game, with one of them being a double by Hannah Niebuhr. The other three hits came from Mariah Anderson, Alivia Bruegger and Brylee Neubauer. The Tigers had just one hit.
Anderson also pitched all seven innings for the Rebels. She gave up the one hit, but no runs, did not walk a batter and struck out 19 Tigers.
Regan Beadell took the loss for Springfield. She gave up the four hits and the one run. She walked two batters and struck out two.
USC 10, K-W 0
The United South Central Rebels softball game against Kenyon-Wanamingo ended up with another big win for the USC girls. They shut out the Knights 10-0 in the game played on Thursday, May 15.
Rebel pitcher Mariah Anderson pitched five innings and gave up one hit, no runs, walked one batter and struck out 14.
The Knight’s Anna Ostertag pitched 4 and a third innings and allowed the 10 runs, seven earned, on six hits, walked seven and struck out six.
The Rebels scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings and then four more in the bottom of the fifth inning to get to the 10 run rule and end the game.
Anderson also led the team at the plate going 3 for 3. Olivia Bungum, Taylor Schroeder, and Lilly Lutteke each had one hit, but Lutteke’s was a double, Bungum’s a triple and Schroeder’s was a home run.
