Cole Becker makes cut in Section golf
Blue Earth Area’s Cole Becker is in 12th place after the first round of the Section 2AA Golf Tournament being played at New Prague.
A total of 15 boys golf teams battled in the opening round of the Section 2AA Boys Golf Tournament at New Prague Golf Club on May 28.
The top four teams from the first day of golf, along with some individuals who are not members of one of the top-four teams, advance to the second and final round which will be played at the same golf course on Tuesday, June 3.
In first place for the teams after the opening round is Southwest Christian with a team score of nine-over-par 297. Holy Family Catholic is in second place with a score of 307, St. Peter is in third with 315 and Le Sueur-Henderson was the final team to make the cut with a score of 333.
Jordan finished fifth with 336 and BEA missed the cut by four strokes with a team score of 337. Waseca was seventh with 343, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial finished eighth with 347, Tri-City United was ninth with 358, St. Clair was 10th, Belle Plaine was 11th with 366, Glencoe-Silver Lake finished 12th with 371, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva placed 13th with 384, Central was 14th with 458 and Maple River did not have a complete team.
One Buc golfer, Cole Becker, qualified for the next round by finishing in a tie for 12th place overall with a seven-over-par score of 79.
Roman Kurvers of Southwest Christian is the individual leader after the first round with an even-par score of 79. He leads Owen Matejcek of St. Peter and Ryder Rose of Southwest Christian by one stroke.
Becker got off to a slow start by recording a bogey on the 10th hole and a double bogey on hole No. 11. He recovered to birdie the 12th hole and par hole Nos. 13 and 14. Becker then had bogeys on the next three holes before finishing the back-nine with a par on hole No. 18. After his first nine holes of golf, Becker was sitting at five-over-par.
Becker’s final nine holes of golf began with a birdie on hole No. 1. He had a bogey on the second hole, parred the third hole and then had bogeys on hole Nos. 4 and 5. However, he finished the front-nine with pars on the final four holes. His two-over-par score on the front nine combined with his five-over-par on the back nine left him at seven-over-par at the end of his round.
BEA’s Jackson Blondin finished with a 12-over-par score of 84. His round included three birdies and four pars.
Manny Granillo shot a 13-over-par 85. He had one birdie and five pars on the day.
Eli Blagg carded a 17-over-par score of 89. Blagg had a birdie and three pars.
Hunter Viland finished with an 18-over-par round of 90. He had one birdie and five pars on the 18-hole course.
Cole Beyer had a birdie and two pars to finish with a 23-over-par score of 95.
