Wildcats begin season with two wins
Baseball team knocks off the Spiders and Pirates to begin season
The Wells Wildcats took down the Blue Earth Pirates 5-3 on Wednesday, May 28.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the third after Cody Huiras doubled, scoring one run.
Kane Malo singled down the left field line, which helped the Pirates tie the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth.
The Pirates took the lead in the top of the sixth. Hunter Bleess scored after tagging up, to give Blue Earth the leg up, 2-1.
Wells made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh after Kade Hobbs induced Huiras to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, and Trey Allis doubled, scoring two runs.
Nick Fure earned the win for the Wildcats. The hurler surrendered one hit and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking none. Hobbs took the loss for the Pirates. The pitcher went two innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out one and walking two.
Jacob Skinness opened the game for Wells. The pitcher gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned) over seven and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking two. Taylor Davids stepped on the bump first for the Pirates. The hurler allowed eight hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out six and walking three. Jack Skinness collected the save.
The Wildcats amassed 10 hits in the game. The Wildcats’s Allis, the number seven hitter, led Wells with three hits in four at bats. Todd Rasmussen and Skinness each collected multiple hits for Wells.
Bleess led the Pirates with three hits in four at bats. Blue Earth turned one double play in the game.
The Wells Wildcats host the Minnesota Lake Royals on Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m.
Wells 11, Cleveland 8
There were hits and runs aplenty on Sunday, May 18, as the Wells Wildcats defeated the Cleveland Spiders 11-8. The Wildcats collected 13 hits, while the Spiders had 12.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the first inning after Cleveland committed an error, Mike Olsen singled to left field, and Nick Fure singled to center field, each scoring one run.
The Wildcats extended their early lead with two runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI singles by Todd Rasmussen and Colten Quade.
Wells added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Jack Skinness singled to center field, and Cleveland committed an error, each scoring one run.
Caleb Conner doubled, which helped the Spiders tie the game at eight in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the 10th, Wells broke up the tie when Rasmussen executed a suicide squeeze to perfection, scoring one run. Then a single by Quade followed to extend the lead to 11-8.
Olsen earned the win for the Wildcats. The pitcher surrendered nine hits and six runs (five earned) over six innings, striking out 10 and walking two. Jacob Skinness stepped on the mound first for Wells. The starting pitcher surrendered three hits and two runs over four innings, striking out six and walking three.
Wells collected 13 hits in the game. Fure, Olsen, and Skinness each collected two hits for the Wildcats. Rasmussen, Quade, and Skinness each drove in two runs. Skinness stole two bases.
