Westfield defeats BEA in Section wrestling
Razorbacks built big lead and then held on for the 38-25 victory
Buccaneer Timmy Nagel will be one of the wrestlers hoping to advance to State at the Section Individual Tournament on Feb. 21, in Janesville.
Things got a little confusing in the Section 2A Team Wrestling Tournament when New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva made the decision to drop out of the Section Tourney. As a result of the Panthers’ decision, the teams were re-seeded and No. 5 seeded Blue Earth Area, who was originally scheduled to wrestle Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, instead traveled to Hayfield to face the No. 4 seeded Westfield Razorbacks.
It turned out to be a close match with Westfield winning 38-25.
At 107 pounds, Westfield got on the scoreboard first when Easton Busho pinned Nolan Sturtz in 2:35 to take a 6-0 lead.
Jason Casey of BEA won by a 19-7 major decision over Devan Subbert 114 pounds to cut Westfield’s lead to 6-4.
Caleb Borcherding won the 121-pound match by a 10-4 decision over Jake Ryan Engelby of the Bucs to increase the Razorbacks’ lead to 9-4.
Westfield’s Bentley Miller defeated Drake Engelby by a 9-0 major decision at 127 pounds to put the Razorbacks out in front 13-4.
Derek Miner’s pin over BEA’s Timmy Nagel at the 3:39 mark of the 133-pound match boosted Westfield’s lead to 19-4.
BEA’s Layden Basset scored a 4-1 decision over Grayden Gunderson at 139 pounds to make the score 19-7 in favor of the Razorbacks.
Westfield picked up another win in the 145-pound match when Isaac Fort won by a 9-8 decision over Collin Alfson which made the score 22-7 with the Razorbacks still in front.
The Bucs fell behind 26-7 when the Razorbacks’ Cayden Maly won by a 12-4 major decision over Danny Nagel.
At 160 pounds, Westfield’s David Clennon pinned Ryder Stauffer at the 2:27 mark. BEA now trailed 32-7.
Colton Tolzmann picked up six points for the Bucs when he pinned Jens Tidemann in 20 seconds in the 172-pound match. The Razorbacks’ lead was reduced to 32-13.
The Bucs’ Will Weerts won at 189 pounds by pinning Elliot Schiller at the 5:59 mark. The score was now 32-19 with the Bucs trailing by 13 points.
Westfield’s Chase Kiser won the 215-pound match by a fall over Carlos Rodriguez in 1:33 to extend their lead to 38-19.
BEA’s Chase Gambell won the 285-pound match by a forfeit to account for the Bucs’ final six points and made the final score 38-25 in favor of Westfield.
The Razorbacks were defeated by the No. 1 seed and eventual champion, the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights, in the semifinals 51-12.
Kenyon-Wanamingo triumphed over WEM/JWP 52-21 to win the Section 2A Team Championship and advance to State.
The Section 2A Individual Tournament was scheduled to be held on Feb. 21, at the Janesville High School.
