The United South Central softball team improved their season record to four wins against zero losses when they defeated the visiting Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers 10-0 in Wells on Thursday, April 16.

The loss dropped the Buccaneers’ record to 0-3 for the season.

The game was scoreless through the first two and half innings before the Rebels broke through and put five runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning against Buccaneers’ pitcher Alix Velzke.

Mariah Anderson hit a one-out double to get things going for the Rebels. Ivy O’Rourke walked to put runners on first and second base. Alivia Bruegger hit into a fielder’s choice with Anderson and O’Rourke each moving up a base.

The clean-up batter, Olivia Bird, delivered a clutch two-out single to score both Anderson and O’Rourke and give USC a 2-0 lead.

An error on a ball hit by Grace Walton allowed Bird to reach third base while Walton was safe at first. A triple by Reanna Obermeyer plated Bird and Walton and put the Rebels on top 4-0.

USC’s final run of the inning was scored when Brielle Obermeyer hit a double to drive in Reanna Obermeyer.

The Rebels added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on one hit and a couple of WEM errors to make it an 8-0 ballgame with the hometown team holding the lead.

USC ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning using hits by Brielle Obermeyer, Izzy Bird, O’Rourke and Bruegger and a walk to Anderson to score two runs for the 10-0 victory.

USC ended up with 10 hits including three doubles and one triple.

Anderson went 3-for-3 at the plate and Brielle Obermeyer was 2-for-3. Bird and Reanna Obermeyer each drove in two runs.

Anderson gave up one hit and walked two batters while recording 11 strikeouts. She threw 52 strikes, 29 balls and had one wild pitch.

In four games this season, the Rebels have not given up a single run.

USC was scheduled to host Martin County West on April 17, Cleveland on April 21, Blooming Prairie on April 23 and Springfield on April 24 before going on the road on April 25 to battle the Randolph Rockets.

USC 19, NRHEG 0

Mariah Anderson pitched a perfect four-inning game and the United South Central Rebels sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning to score eight runs on their way to a 19-0 victory over the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers in Wells on Wednesday, April 15.

The big blow on offense was Mariah Anderson’s three-run homer on her second trip to the plate in USC’s first time at bat.

Anderson led off the inning by reaching first base on a dropped third strike.

Julianna Clore came in to run for Anderson, stole second base and scored on a solid single by Ivy O’Rourke. Alivia Bruegger was the next batter to the plate and she also singled.

Grace Walton flied out to center and Olivia Bird flied out to right with O’Rourke tagging up and scoring from third base. Carissa Hanson reached first base on an error which allowed Bruegger to score. Reanna Obermeyer singled to advance Hanson to second base.

A base hit by Brielle Obermeyer plated Hanson with the Rebels’ fourth run of the inning and allowed Reanna Obermeyer to move to third base. Designated hitter Hannah Niebuhr’s single scored Reanna Obermeyer while Brielle Obermeyer checked in at third base.

That brought Anderson to the plate. After head coach TJ Schmidtke shouted some words of encouragement to Anderson, the senior hit the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to add three more runs to USC’s total and extend their led to 8-0.

Meanwhile Anderson was having another efficient day on the pitching mound.

In her four innings of work, she faced the minimum number of batters – 12 – and struck out 10 of them. She threw a total of 54 pitches with 36 of them being strikes and 18 being balls.

Anderson struck out the side in the first and fourth innings. Of the two balls put in play by the Rebels, one was a fly out to the Rebels’ right fielder, Izzy Bird, while the other NRHEG batter was retired on a ground out to Anderson.

USC scored one run in the bottom of the second inning before adding 10 more runs in their half of the third inning.

The Rebels finished with 15 hits. Anderson, O’Rourke and Bruegger each had three hits. Anderson finished with four runs batted in and O’Rourke drove in three runs. Brielle Obermeyer also had three runs batted in while getting two hits.

In addition to Anderson’s home run, USC’s other extra-base hits were doubles by Brielle Obermeyer, Bruegger and O’Rourke.

USC 17, Triton 0

The United South Central girls softball team exploded for 10 runs in the first inning of their game hosting Triton, and ended up winning 17-0 in three and a half innings.

The game was played in Wells on Thursday, April 9.

The Rebel girls had 10 hits in the game.

Ivy O’Rourke was 2-for-3, with one of her hits a double, and had three runs batted in.

Reanna Obermeyer was 2-for-2. Alivia Bruegger was 1-for-2 but her one hit was a homerun.

Carissa Hanson, Brielle Obermeyer, Olivia Bird and Mariah Anderson all had just one hit, but that one hit was a double for each of them.

Three Rebels got on base by being hit by a pitch.

Mariah Anderson pitched all four innings and gave up one hit, no runs, walked three and struck out 12.

Triton pitcher Jalyn Fate pitched one inning and gave up six hits, 10 runs, four walks, no strikeouts and one homerun.

Claire Pearson pitched two innings and gave up seven runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three.
