BEA girls are BSC small school champs
Storbeck, Hanson and Becker receive All-Conference accolades
Blue Earth Area’s Katelyn Storbeck chips to a green during a meet held at Minn-Iowa Golf Course earlier this season.
The Blue Earth Area girls golf team competed in the Big South Girls Conference Championship which was held at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club near Morton on May 11.
The 14-team tournament saw Marshall come out on top with a team score of 377 in the 18-hole meet with Fairmont taking the runner-up spot with 378. BEA was third with 400.
“We were third behind Marshall and Fairmont at this meet,” BEA golf coach Al Cue explained. “However, because we had accumulated more points during previous conference meets, we beat Fairmont.”
The Bucs were also the champs of the small school division which in addition to BEA, includes Fairmont, Windom, Redwood Falls, Luverne, Pipestone and Jackson County Central.
“We actually only lost the overall championship to Marshall by one point, 52-51 in accumulated points,” Cue added.
Rounding out the top-five team scores were Worthington with 405 and St. Peter with 415.
Two BEA golfers, Katelyn Storbeck and McKinley Hanson, earned Big South Conference All-Conference honors.
The co-medalists for the meet at Dacotah Ridge were Katherine Zelaya of Fairmont and Dayton Webskowski of Marshall. Both golfers shot nine-over-par scores of 81.
The Bucs’ Katelyn Storbeck finished one stroke back with an 82 which put her in third place.
Storbeck had a birdie and three pars on the front nine while carding an eight-over-par score of 44. During her final nine holes of play, the senior recorded a birdie and five pars while shooting a two-over-par score of 38.
The Bucs’ McKinley Hanson and Hailey Hanson were part of a three-way tie for 16th place with each golfer shooting a 101.
McKinley Hanson recorded three pars on the day while Hailey Hanson finished her round with one birdie and two pars.
Grace Schavey and Lola Lundquist each shot 116 to finish in a three-way tie for 49th place. Schavey parred three holes while Lundquist had one par on the day.
Averi Blair finished the day tied for 60th after shooting a round of 127. Blair finished the day with one par.
The girls played host to Jackson County Central and Martin County West at Minn-Iowa Golf Course near Elmore on May 14 and are scheduled to take on United South Central on May 19 at Oak View Golf Course near Freeborn. Look for the results of those meets in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
Section play begins on May 27 at the New Prague Golf Club.
Big South Conference Boys Championship
On, May 12, one day after the Big South Conference Girls Golf Championship Tournament, the boys took to the course at the Dacotah Ridge Golf Club for their championship tournament.
While the girls played their tournament on a day with calm wind conditions, the boys had to battle high winds during their 18 holes of golf.
St. Peter won the 14-team tournament with a team score of 321. Rounding out the top five teams were New Ulm in second place with a score of 342, Marshall in third with 353, Luverne in fourth with 364 and Redwood Valley in fifth with 380. Blue Earth Area finished 14th with 408.
Individually, St. Peter golfers captured three of the top five spots on the leader board.
Isaiah Homrighausen of the Saints was the medalist with a five-over-par score of 77 while his teammate, Owen Matejcek, and Asher Wendinger of New Ulm, tied for the runner-up position with each golfer shooting a 78. Another St. Peter golfer, Kade Mata, finished fourth with an 80 and Deacon Wing of Marshall was fifth with an 82.
The Bucs’ best performance for the day was by Cole Becker who shot an 18-over-par score of 90 to finish in 14th place.. Becker began his round on the back nine where he made three pars. He finished his round with two birdies and a par on the front nine.
For the season, Becker’s accumulated points put his in seventh place in the Big South Conference which earned Becker All-Conference honors.
Other BEA golfers participating at Dacotah Ridge were Ian Viland who finished tied for 33rd with a round of 97, Gavin Christenson who tied for 59th with a 104, Nathan Casias who was 80th with a 120, Reed Sturtz who finished 82nd with a 129 and Jacob Murray who was 83rd with a 136.
