The United South Central Rebels softball team lost a heartbreaker on Tuesday, May 2, against the Medford Tigers.

The final score was 2-1. The Rebels actually outhit the Tigers 4-1, but stranded six runners on base during the game.

USC scored first, getting one run in the top of the sixth inning. But Medford came back and scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Tigers scored a run and won the game 2-1.

Taylor Schroeder had the hot bat for the Rebels, going 2 for 4 at the plate and scoring USC’s only run. Olivia Bungum and Kendal Harpestad had the other two Rebel hits.

Mariah Anderson pitched all eight innings and gave up the two runs on only one hit. She walked three and struck out nine.

Next up for the Rebels was a home game on Thursday, May 4, against Faribault Bethlehem Academy. This week they are scheduled for a home game on Monday, May 8, against Southland and a game on Thursday, May 11 at Blooming Prairie.

USC 3, WEM 0

The United South Central softball team only scored three runs against the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers, but it was enough to gain a 3-0 shutout against the Bucs.

The game was played at WEM on Monday, May 1.

The Rebels had eight hits in the game, while USC pitcher Mariah Anderson held WEM to just one hit in the seven inning game.

USC scored one run in the top of the third inning and another two runs in the top of the fourth.

Taylor Schroeder led the team at the plate, going 3 for 3, with one of her hits being a triple and one a double.

Also getting a double was Anderson, and hitting singles was Molly Wegner, Olivia Bungum, Ally Stenzel and Ivy O’Rourke.

Anderson pitched all seven innings, giving up no runs and just one hit, while walking four and striking out 10.

The two WEM pitchers combined for allowing the three runs on eight hits, walking six and striking out five.

USC 4, ML/GHEC/T 2

The United South Central girls softball team took a good lead over the Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman girls, then hung on to take a 4-2 win. The game was played on Saturday, April 29, in Wells.

The Rebels started off the game by getting two runs in the first inning, and another two runs in the third inning, to take a 4-0 lead.

ML/GHEC/T scored two of their own in the fourth inning, but both teams stayed scoreless in the next three innings.

The Rebels outhit their opponents 7-4 in the game. Olivia Bungum led the way for USC with two hits in three at bats. Kendal Harpestad, Molly Wegner, Taylor Schroeder, Brylee Neubauer and Ivy O’Rourke each had one hit in the game.

Bungum and Harpestad also each stole two bases, with Wegner, O’Rourke and Neubauer each stealing one.

The Rebels’ star pitcher, Mariah Anderson, pitched all seven innings, giving up the two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out 17 batters.

USC 3, Triton 2

In a really close game, the United South Central Rebels girls’ softball team came out with a win in a game that went into extra innings.

They defeated the Triton Cobras 3-2 in a game played on Thursday, April 27, at Triton.

The Cobras struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Rebels scored two runs of their own in the top half of the third inning, to knot the game up at 2-2.

It stayed that way through seven innings. In the top of the eighth inning the Rebels scored a run to go up 3-2, then kept the Cobras from scoring in the bottom half of the eighth.

Triton actually outhit USC in the game, 10-7.

Ivy O’Rourke led the Rebels at the plate, going 2 for 3. Mariah Anderson, Taylor Schroeder, Molly Wegner, Brylee Neubauer and Oliva Bungum all had one hit each.

Neubauer’s hit was a triple while Wegner and Bungum each had a double.

Mariah Anderson again pitched all eight innings, giving up the 10 hits and the two runs. She issued two walks and struck out 16 Cobra batters.
