Does the editor want a little bit of cheese with his whine this week?

By Chuck Hunt - Editor | May 3, 2026

Did you ever have one of “those” weeks?

You know, one of “those” weeks, when you are so busy you hardly have time to turn around once, much less twice, and you start to wonder what is going to happen next?

Yeah, it was one of “those” weeks for me.

The shocking part? This was the last week of the month for us at the Register, which historically is usually the slowest week of the month. You know, usually not many meetings to cover and not a lot of events.

But there are still sports. And if you count the number of USC Rebel sporting events in this issue of the Register you will see there are 12. That could be a record. Now the baseball games, for instance, are all grouped under one headline, but when you tally up all the individual sporting events it is 12 different events just for USC. Throw in seven or eight or nine Blue Earth Area sport events, well, we almost needed to go an extra section just for sports.

Our “week” for sports coverage goes from Thursday of one week, through Wednesday of the next week. I know, that is a little wacky but that is the way it is.

That was just one thing that kept me and the staff busy this week. There are a lot of ads in this week’s issue too, so lots to read.

And with one of our employees on vacation, Pam True, we all had a few extra duties this week.

However, most of my busyness this week was personal.

For instance, a good friend of ours died and we went to the visitation in Hendricks, Minnesota. His wife worked for us at our newspaper there for more years than some of you have been alive.

Then two of our grandchildren turned 22 and we had to celebrate their birthdays, one in Brookings, South Dakota and one in Mankato. Well, yeah, OK, that was fun.

And then, for some stupid reason, I thought I should have a garage sale because it was garage sale time in Blue Earth and well, I had a bunch of stuff to sell at the sale. Then I remembered why I don’t have a garage sale every year…they are a lot of WORK. Lots of prep time before the sale, not to mention the actual days of the sale.

Then, as you will read elsewhere in the Register this week, the Dinosaur Museum has a special guest this week, Walter, who is building a large skeleton for us at the musuem. Not a dinosaur skeleton but a bison skeleton made out of 7,000-year-old bison bones that the museum has owned for some time. There were hundreds of bones to choose from, so the actual truth is that they did not all come from the same animal. But it is pretty cool and will be an awesome addition to the museum when it is finished this weekend.

And if that is not enough, the Dinosaur Museum is also going to be participating in the Wine Walk this next weekend, and yes, that also takes a bit of prep work. Who knew? OK, all the businesses that have participated in the past years knew, but this is the museum’s first time. In honor of our brand-new bison skeleton, we are going to serve bison wine. Really, no joke. Buy a Wine Walk ticket and come see for yourself this next Saturday.

Back at the office, since this is the first of May, we start work on our annual Best of Summer magazine that will come out at the end of May. That, too takes a bit of prep work and does not just magically happen. But it is full of information about what is happening in Faribault County in the summer. While you won’t see that magazine until the end of May/first of June, we are already working on it.

And now that I look at my desk calendar for next week, there is once again a whole lot of sports on the schedule, and things like proms and meetings and much more to cover.

So why am I whining about how busy I am, as are the rest of the staff at the Register, and telling you about all the things I was doing this past week or so?

Well, I am telling you all this because it is the reason that I did not have any time to write a column this week. I thought about several subjects but I just didn’t think any of them were very good or interesting enough to warrant a full column devoted to them.

For instance, I have been told by numerous people that the mascot for the former school in Easton was the Tigers. If you don’t know why I am telling you that, then you didn’t read last week’s column, and I feel just a little bit hurt.

But I am too busy to mope about it for very long.

So, since I could not come up with a decent column this week, I hereby promise the next week’s will be awesome.
