3-way race develops in District 5

The official filing period for persons wishing to run for federal, state and county elections officially closed this past Tuesday, June 2.

And, two more persons filed for the county commissioner District 5 position currently held by Tom Warmka, creating a three-way race for the seat.

Commissioner Warmka had earlier announced he would not run for re-election. Earlier in the filing period Dennis Kosiolek, of rural Wells, filed. Last Monday, June 1, Paul Bach, of rural Wells, and Bruce Anderson, of rural Bricelyn, both filed for the District 5, seat as well.

District 5 covers Bricelyn, Kiester, Minnesota Lake, Walters, and townships of Kiester, Seely, Brush Creek, Foster, Walnut Lake and Minnesota Lake.

The county election will include three open seats on the County Board. They are Districts 1, 3 and 5.

District 1 covers Blue Earth Ward 3, Elmore, Frost and townships of Blue Earth, Emerald, Elmore and rome. The seat is currently held by John Roper and he has filed for re-election.

District 3 covers the city of Wells and Clark and Dunbar townships. The seat is currently held by William “Bill” Groskreutz and he has filed for re-election.

Federal offices include presidential electors, U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative from District 1. Those filings are handled through the Secretary of State’s office.

In U.S. House District 1, incumbent Jim Hagedorn, Republican, Blue Earth, filed on May 29. DFL challenger Dan Feehan, of Mankato, filed on May 26. And, Bill Rood of the Grassroots – Legalize Cannabis Party filed on June 1.

State offices include State Senate District 23 and 27, State Representative District 23A, 23B and 27A. Those are handled at the Faribault County Courthouse or the Secretary of State’s office.

Current District 23 State Senator Julie Rosen, Republican, has filed for re-election and David Pulkrabek, of Blue Earth, Legal Marijuana Now Party, has also filed for the state senate seat. In Senate District 27 DFLer Dan Sparks, Republican Gene Dornink and Legal Marijuana Now Party’s Tyler Becvar have all filed.

Bjorn Olson, Republican, of Elmore, has filed for the State Representative District 23A seat being vacated by Rep. Bob Gunther R-Fairmont. So has Republican Michael Sukalski and DFLer Patricia Fahey Bacon.

In District 27A, incumbent Peggy Bennett, Republican, has filed, as has DFL challenger Thomas Martinez of Hayward and DFLer Joe Pacovsky.

Many judicial offices are also open. Locally, Faribault County District Court Judge (5th District Court 13) Troy Timmerman’s term is expiring and he has filed for re-election.

Also locally there are two Soil and Water District supervisor positions open for District 1 and 4. Incumbent Jeff Bell has filed for his position in District 1, and Incumbent Neal Mensing has filed for re-election to his seat in District 4. No one else filed.

The General Election is set for this coming November.
