Rebels’ knock Southland from unbeaten ranks
The United South Central baseball team had to overcome a big first inning deficit, but they rose to the task as they defeated the Maple River Eagles in Mapleton on Monday, May 4.
The final score was 10-7.
The Rebels score one run in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles came up with six runs in the bottom of the first for a 6-1 lead.
USC countered with four runs in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Maple River scored one in the bottom of the second to go up by two, 7-5.
Then the Rebel bats took over and they scored two runs in the third to tie the game and one in the fourth to go ahead 8-7.
They got two insurance runs in the seventh inning, while holding the Eagles scoreless for the last five innings. That made the final 10-7.
Both teams had seven hits and both teams had five errors.
Mason Haugh led the team at the plate, going 3-for-4, including a triple.
Rylan Clay, Kolt Bullerman, Drew Bullerman and Seth Kayser all had a hit in the game, with Kayser nailing a double.
Riley Stevermer started the game and pitched a third of an inning, giving up six runs on four hits, walking three and no strike outs.
Rylan Clay came in for six and two thirds innings and gave up one run on three hits, had no walks and struck out eight Eagle batters.
Maple River’s two pitchers combined gave up 10 runs, seven hits, six walks and five strike outs.
The Rebels were next set to host Kenyon-Wanamingo on Thursday, May 7, Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday, May 8, and go to St. James on Saturday, May 9.
This week they will host Springfield on Tuesday, May 12 and Medford on Thursday, May 14, before heading to play Granada-Huntley-East Chain on Friday, May 15.
USC 9, Southland 6
It was a major upset victory when the United South Central Rebels baseball team defeated the Southland Rebels baseball team.
The USC Rebels defeated the Southland Rebels 9-6 on Friday, May 1, in Wells.
It was the first loss of the season for the Southland Rebels as they came into the game with a 7-0 record.
USC jumped out in front 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Southland quickly tied it up 3-3 in the top of the second inning, but USC came back with one run in the bottom of the second to take the lead at 3-1 and never trail or have a tie in the game.
USC Rebels would score three more in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-3. The Southland Rebels scored three in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6. USC quickly score two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 9-6, which ended up being the final when Southland did not score in the seventh.
USC out hit Southland 10-6.
Rylan Clay, Kolt Bullerman, Drew Bullerman and Mitchell Meyer all had two hits in the game, with Mason Atchely, and Colson Rauenhorst hitting one each. Rauenhorst, Meyer and Drew Bullerman all hit a double in the game. Drew Bullerman, Seth Kayser and Meyer all had two RBI.
Meyer was the starting pitcher and got the win. He pitched five and one third innings, giving up six runs on six hits, walking two batters and striking out three. Clay came in for one and two thirds innings and allowed no hits or runs, walked one batter and struck out none.
In their next game the Southland Rebels defeated Austin-Pacelli, a team that had previously defeated the USC Rebels.
JWP 4, USC 3
The United South Central Rebels’ baseball team suffered another one run, back and forth scoring loss in a game against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday, April 30, at Janesville.
Neither team scored in the first two innings and JWP scored one run in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead.
The Rebels countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead with the score 2-1.
In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs came back with three runs and were up 4-2.
The Rebels scored one run in the seventh and final inning but it was not enough and they lost 4-3.
JWP outhit USC 6 to 4.
Mason Haugh, Kolt Bullerman, Drew Bullerman and Seth Kayser accounted for USC’s four hits. Drew Bullerman drove in two of USC’s run and Kayser one.
Mitch Atchley pitched all six innings for the Rebels, giving up the four runs, two of them earned, on six hits. He walked two Bulldog batters and struck out three.
JWP’s two pitchers accounted for seven innings, allowed three runs on four hits, walked five Rebel batters and struck out nine.
