Buccaneer girls finish first in 12-team Fairmont Invitational Golf Meet

It felt more like late October football weather than golf weather when Blue Earth Area hosted United South Central in a non-conference golf meet at the Minn-Iowa Golf Course on Tuesday, May 5.

Colder than normal temperatures were accompanied by a constant wind that had players and fans alike dressing warmer than usual for this time of year.

Boys Results

The team competition had the Bucs finishing with a 25-over-par score of 169 to defeat the Rebels who finished with a score of 182.

BEA’s Cole Becker earned medalist honors with a one-over-par score of 37 to edge USC’s Brennan Olson by two strokes in the nine-hole meet.

Becker’s winning score included a birdie on hole No. 3, pars on hole Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 and bogies on hole Nos. 5 and 7.

Olson’s score of 39 included a birdie on hole No. 9, pars on the first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh holes, bogies on hole Nos. 3 and 8 and a double bogie on the sixth hole.

Gavin Christenson of the Bucs came in third with a six-over-par score of 42. Christenson had a birdie and three pars during his round.

BEA’s Nathan Casias shot a 44 to finish in fourth place. Casias recorded three pars.

Coming in fifth was USC’s Octavio Hernandez with a 45. Hernandez also recorded three pars on the day.

The Maroon and Gold’s Ian Viland carded a 46 to finish in sixth place and complete the Bucs’ team scoring.

USC’s Colten Husfeldt and Ryder Anderson provided the Rebels’ final team scores by finishing in a tie for seventh place after each golfer shot a 49.

BEA’s other golfers and their scores were: Wyatt Holland who shot a 52, Gavin Owen with a 53, Jacob Murray finished with a 56, Reed Sturtz had a 60, Aizik Johnson carded a 62 and Jack Haase had a 66.

Other USC golfers included Jaxon Hart and Carter Wigern who each shot a 53 and Harrison Chandler who finished with a 54.

Girls Results

USC did not field a complete team. BEA finished with a 196 which is 48-over-par.

Shooting the low score for the Bucs and claiming medalist honors was Katelyn Storbeck who had a four-over-par score of 41. Storbeck’s round included seven pars.

BEA’s McKinley Hanson claimed runner-up honors with a 13-over-par score of 50. Hanson recorded two pars.

The Bucs’ Lola Lundquist placed third with a 15-over-par 52 and Haedyn Cole finished fourth and provided BEA’s final score for the team total with a 16-over-par score of 53. Cole recorded two pars during her round.

Other BEA golfers and their scores were Alexis Thompson and Grace Schavey with 54s, Averi Blair with a 55, Reese Olson with a 56, and Isabel Vargas and Sophie Hall with 67s.

USC had three golfers. Brynlee Olson shot a 68, Bella Roberts had a 72 and Jayleigh Steckelberg finished with a 77.

Fairmont Invitational

The Fairmont Invitational Golf Tournament for both boys and girls was held on Friday, May 1.

The girls competed at Rose Lake Golf Club while Interlaken Golf Club was the site of the boys competition.

Girls Results

The Buccaneers pulled off a big win by topping the 12-team girls field with a team score of 374 to outdistance the host Fairmont team who shot a 385 to finish 11 strokes behind BEA. Rounding out the top-five finishers were Worthington with 388, St. Peter with 402 and Luverne with 403.

The Bucs’ Katelyn Storbeck shot a six-over-par 77 to win the medalist honors at the meet. She edged runner-up Katherine Zelaya of Fairmont by 10 strokes.

Storbeck’s round included 12 pars and one birdie.

McKinley Hanson missed finishing in the top-10 by one stroke. Her round of 94 put her in 11th place. Hanson recorded six pars during her round.

Lola Lundquist shot a 99 to finish tied for 14th place. She had one birdie and one par.

Hailey Hanson provide the Bucs’ final score for the team total. Hanson finished tied for 23rd place after recording one par while shooting a round of 104.

BEA’s other two golfers were Averi Blair who finished with a 118 and Grace Schavey who had a 121.
